polish vs wax

can someone note the difference's? my car is less then 3 years old and im noticing that the paint doesnt shine anymore after a wash, im trying to get a mirror finish/shine out of the car, and i went to the local auto trying to find a polish but i noticed most of them say wax/polish and have the same instructions as a wax would, i picked up something called ice polish, from turtle.

Ive clay bar'd the car allready and that helped some, but can someone recommend something (besides zaino... =P) that i could use? i have nxt wax as well as the ice turtle polish. What is the proper applying order?

dawn
rince
wash
rince

Polish and wax get used interchangeably on alot of over the counter stuff. If you want to remove swirls etc, and you'll be working by hand, get meg's scratch-x, but be prepared for alot of work as it requires alot of powerful rubbing to get any effect. A porter cable random orbital polisher would be a good investment for you.

or you could go the zaino route. it hides swirls and gives you a mirror shine. i love it. I use zaino instructions to wash and polish, then wax.

polish is an abrasive

wax is not (unless they put in abrasive agents and called it "cleaner wax")

Zaino doesn't make a polish or a wax, they make sealants. Like Kenchan stated above me, polishes are abrasives and are used to remove a thin layer of clear coat to remove swirl marks.

To the OP..........As for using a sealant vs a wax, it is all a personal preference. Some like the appearance of a wax, while some like the appearance of a sealant. There really is no best, it is what is best for you.

You might want to take a look at post #6 of this thread as Kevin (who is the resident detailing guru) gives a great explanation of both a wax and a sealant.

The word polish, when used in regard to a protective product like Zaino, is being used incorrectly. Zaino does it because the word polish is easier for a layman to understand that "synthetic polymer based sealant". Zaino Z2pro and Z5pro, and Turtle Wax Ice, are *sealants*, not polishes. The only real Zaino polish is ZPC.

The differences between a wax and sealant are in the thread above.

I've said this a thousand times and I am sure I will say it again:

Which last step product (sealant or wax) you use has VERY LITTLE to do with the end result of a detail. The important part of detailing is the paint preparation, claying and polishing (in the real sense). The term polish, when used correctly, means an abrasive compound applied to the paint, broken down with heat and friction to remove a very thin layer of paint thus leveling it to remove surface imperfections.

Read the rest of the thread I linked for info on polishing, claying, washing, assuming stolen identities...

polish as in glaze.. gives the car a brighter, deeper shine. wax is an overlaying coat, protectant as you will. If I remember correctly from Meguiar's Day lol. I know what the two are used for, and how to use them. But to define, I'm not too sure.
