I was told that claying the car would remove all bonded surface contaminants,
including the wax. Is it necessary to use dawn/IPA to remove the wax first.

I use M21 on my black G, wasn't sure if a sealant would behave any different from a wax.

claying will always remove to some extent the wax/sealant on the paint due to the nature of a claybar. The aggressiveness of the claybar usually determine this though, and most OTC claybars are fairly gentle so only some of the wax will be stripped. Its stil a good idead to rewax after claying though

I usually use a spritz or two of QD to aid in the removal of the hazed wax and add a little pop to the finish. Then I follow up with a good spray wax for some boosted protection such as duragloss aquawax

I know everyone mustve told you this already but make sure you use ALOT of paint lubricant. If yoou feel the slightest rough pass on the paint spray away with the lube, a couple of sprays on the clay itself also. Make sure to knead the clay after every panel.

I usually 'clean' the surface (1:1 IPA or Menzerna Final Inspection) to remove oil/wax/etc to enable me to clearly see the surface marring without the benefit of 'fillers', and it also avoids a foam pad from becoming 'gummed-up' (is that a word?)

4 hours!?? It usually takes me about 15-30 minutes to claybar depending on how long it's been since the last job. Check this how-to

Subject: Claybar Advice......!

Using a claybar is real easy, and the secret to doing the job well is to use
plenty of lube where your using the bar. If you're doing the hood spray the
lube on heavy then follow the body lines with the bar. Run your hand across
the surface to make sure the surface gunk is gone. For all you members that
insist on washing your car with detergent, you are drying out the paint!
And to be blunt that's stupid! There's not a professional detail person on the
planet that washes his cars with forking detergent, dawn or otherwise! I've
never washed my cars with anything but cold water and always in the shade.
