I just fill it up about half way with soap. it's enough to cover the whole car with suds. I also have a regular bucket with soap that I dip my microfiber sponge into.
I understand that whole going with the cheap alternative will bite you in the *** mentality, but this thing does the job. It just covers the car with suds and is a fraction of the price of that foammasterII.

I don't think you have to, but I would rather maximize the suds.

i have a foamgun. it works pretty good. saves a lot of time.
