What causes this type of damage in clear coat?

There are spots all over the sky facing parts of my car. Hood, roof, trunk.

There are actual divets in these spots (when I pass a fingernail over them, I feel a hole).

I am wondering what can cause holes like this? I am worried that I will need to do an entire repaint so rust doesn't eat the car away. Hopefully I can get this done under insurance or dealer warranty.

The car is a 2006 G sedan with OB paint. I bought it used, but as far as I know, it is the original paint.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Does your car have the original paint?

That's a possibility. I do live close to the ocean.

You need some detailing to fix this.

I just had the car fully detailed at a very good shop 2-3 months ago. I should have mentioned that. It is not a detailing issue as there are actual holes/divets in the clear coat.

Is rail dust from rail road tracks? Coke dust is from industrial manufacturing right? Does this stuff have the power to eat away clear coat?

If you can feel holes there is nothing you can do other then polish it down. looks like rocks chips. Good wax can hide em.

They are all over the car though. Literally hundreds of them, on just about every upward facing panel. There might be some on the sides too, I need to check once it gets light out. I would like to polish it out, but I think the clear coat might be super thin as two of the holes on the roof have actually gone down to the steel and are rusting.

Does anyone think there is a good chance of getting insurance to cover this?

To your question about what's rail and coke from. Yes you are correct. At the refinery I work at every vehicle has those marks. And people that park near a coker plant or railroad tracks will get it also. Only fix is a repaint
