It is personal preference but, after researching this stuff for years and years, I can't imagine buying anything other than Valentine.

And yes, you don't need one if you obey. Some of us like to know where the cops hiding regardless. Plus, most of us are I.T. guys. We have to have gadgets. That's just how it is.

The law is nothing new. RADAR jamming has been illegal for as long as there has been RADAR. You are using an Unlicensed transmitting device banned by the Federal Communications Act of 1934 as amended, therefore the FCC controls.

The LASER jamming is new. LASERS are controlled by the Food and Drug Administration NOT the FCC. So the Texas just made it a State Law.

I always figured a cop would pull you over if you were using a laser jammer anyways.

Heres a scenario.

You're going down the high way.
Cop shoots you with laser.
Gets an odd reading or error. Shoots again and gets the same....something is up.

I use a Beltronics 65 and it has saved me plenty of times. I have also used a 8500 X50 and both work great.

I always kinda figured laser jammers to be illegal anyways.

There are a few responses to that one, so here goes.

First off, when a cop shoots you with laser and the laser jammer is successful, most guns read no results and there are like two that read gun error. So, with that said, in Texas, prior to this law, if a cop saw this, there's NOTHING they can do. They have to prove a rate of speed and if the gun returns nothing, they've got nothing. Also, the jammer only jams the signal temporarily (like 5 seconds) and the intention of the product is to allow you to slow down for the cop to shoot you a second time and get a speed that is at or below the speed limit.

Tales from a few friends that have them and have actually put them to use, most cops just shrug it off and shoot the next car. Of course, the really smart cops know how to shoot your car and avoid the laser jammers. A buddy of mine was being picked on by some cops that he was friends with, so they were f*cking with him... hehe

Reading the OP it appears that this law doesn't just apply to Laser jammers, but also to radar jammers. I should have been more specific, I seem to get signals from opposing traffic on my V1 on the X-band. It disappears as I pass opposing traffic and it has happened several times when there were no buildings in the area so I have to assume someone going the other way had a X-band jammer.

I picked up the V1 from a pawn shop for $150 and immediately sent it to V1 to be updated. Now that was a few years ago, so there may be more up to date software available now, but for $150 you just can't go wrong.

I'm looking for another detector for my wife, but I just can't justify $500 for the 8500. I'll find something used that will do, but in the mean time she will just have to keep using the original Passport I already have.

You can get an 8500 brand new from Escort for $300, so I'm sure it's even cheaper other places. Unless you mean the 9500.

You are likely picking up X band from cars with the active radar, lane change warning gizmo. A recent update from V1 would likely resolve that for you. Or you could do what I do and just fully disable X band on your V1. I get virtually no false alarms now. Stores don't even set off Ka band anymore with the later V1 software.
