3rd-->6th gear grind when shifting at high rpms

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: When I accelerate in 3rd gear towards redline and then shift to 6th gear, the gear grinds.

so my style of driving is i'll cruise in 6th and then when i need to accelerate i will rev match into 3rd (smooth) do my accelerating and then shift back into 6th to cruise.

everything was fine for a while. then after a 8-10 months, it WOULD NOT LET ME go back into 6th after 3rd. i'd have to unclutch and clutch in again and then it would let me go into 6th. this was annoying but it was not hurting my car so i was ok with it.

at about 1.5ears of ownership i took the car to the dealer and complained of the 1-2 gear clunkiness. they had a tech drive my car and the tech told me it was fine. then the tech said "on this car you DON'T EVEN HAVE TO USE THE CLUTCH". and he proceeded to shift my car without clutching at moderate rpms (2-3k) and it seemed ok. although i was kinda freaked out. The very same night, i found that after going into 3rd and reving toward redline, my car would once again LET ME GO INTO 6th. Unfortunately, 6th gear now grinds in this scenario.

RECAP: When I accelerate in 3rd gear towards redline and then shift to 6th gear, the gear grinds.

What should I do? I am guessing its the synchros going. Obviously the tech exacerbated the problem by shifting without clutching. I hate dealing with dealerships they are total jerks and idiots. I will tell them what happened but they will 1) not believe me when i say that was when the problem started and 2) not be able to replicate the problem (just like they say ther's no 1-2 clunk, same bs dealerships always pull).

i have tried to change my driving style and go into 4th or 5th b4 going into 6th. but i forget sometimes and then 6th grinds.

isn't that a little tough for the synchros? 3 gears?

mojo. I had the EXACT same problem twice and got a new tranny each time. I would shift from 3 at redline to 6th gear. It would let me in but it would grind very badly. I took it in and they said that I wasn't supposed to be shifting in that manner and that the correct way was 3-4; 4-5; 5-6. I said that was not correct and that there was no set of rules on what gear to gear you should shift. They told me that until it started to grind from 5th to 6th that they weren't going to do anything. Well, within the month it started grinding from 5th to 6th. They replaced the tranny. 6k miles later it happened again. They replaced it again! I have had this new tranny for 30k. It's holding strong. And I am FI for the past 4k and not a problem whatsoever. I have 60k on it now.

Don't let them push you around. Get that new tranny.

Skyline, thanks for sharing your experience. It makes me think though that I, like you, will have to wait until its grinding 5-->6th. The only way i can "not let them push me around" is by threatening litigation or something. I don't think they'll buy that.

Any thoughts?

I just had my transmission replaced a month ago for the same reason. My 1-2 shift at redline would grind and any moderate acceleration when in 3rd gear, then shifting to 6th gear would grind.

Now my problem is if I'm accelerating at redline or so in 3rd gear, and i go to put it in 6th to cruise...it won't let me. I have to wait until I slow down or I have to press the clutch in 3 or 4 times.

this is what my problem was b4 the infiniti tech messed with it. now it goes in. unfortunately it grinds. if you wanna put it in just double clutch. clutch in, take it out of 3rd, clutch out, gas if needed, clutch in put it in 6th.

it sucks since this is my first car with a stick shift. its kinda ruining my perception of sticks. my last car was an auto vette. just stomp the gas and take off. this stick shift car takes so much work and its not even that fast.
