Question Is this the clutch "sticking?"

I've got an 05 6mt coupe w/ 46k miles on it. Earlier tonight i was out driving and as i was nearing a friends house i was shifting out of 1st and i felt the clutch kinda 'pop' about halfway through its travel.

More specifically: it felt like i was just crossing the friction point and the clutch was about to leave the equation when my pedal kind of lulled and then popped against my foot. It felt as if the pedal had been pressed against some sort of sticky substance and then it just popped free. Sometimes it would do this a second time when the clutch pedal was almost fully disengaged. It happened only when i worked the clutch pedal at a slow to moderate pace, when i worked the clutch fast it wouldn't lull/pop. It was also more likely to occur when changing into a gear although it did happen a number of times when playing with the clutch in neutral.

It has since stopped doing that but i don't know what the heck the problem was. I checked the assmebly's surroundings and its clear of all obstructions, sticky or not. So is this what is called "clutch sticking?" Should i contact the stealership about it or should i just change the fluid as mentioned in the longer thread about sticking clutches?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

try changing out and flushing the fluid first, if that doesn't help, take it to the stealership. i had the same thing happen on mine, and changing out the fluid solved the problem

To test it, dump the clutch at 4-5k from a standstill. If it sticks to the floor, take it to the dealer. They should replace the slave cylinder.

yea, you may just have some air in the line. Just bleed the clutch line and see if that works.

Replace the slave cylinder

Don't waste your time drain and refiil, if air is in the line, something is wrong... period. If you drain/refill you are dealing with the symptom, not the problem. If the slave cylinder is bad, the clutch is sure to follow. I speak from experience so you can try your luck if you like.

Guys,

I have a similar issue and wanted know what you thought...

Details are:

05 6MT with 101K on original clutch. Never abused, dumped or anything. Just normal driving.

Today started fine driving, then halfway through a city loop of errands, the clucth resistance when pressing in started 2-3 inches after pedal pushed in. Normally when pushing clutch, you feel resistance right at the top as it disengages, shift, release and it pulls all the way back up. This time and for the rest of the ride home, it would only come half-way up and needed my foot to pull it up the rest of the way.

In playing with it on ride home, it was almost floppy when pushing it down the first 3 inches or so and each shift seemed list it was grabbing further and further down...when they ususally all grab near the top.

I got it home, parked for 30min or so then took it out again. Has a little play in it the first couple times pushed, but then went back to what seems normal and is now shifting as it used to...

The clutch definitely seems like it has worn over time, but there is no slippage at all, pulls strong all the way to redline in all gears.

Is this a slave cyl that is slowly failing? I made an appt at dealer for Wed, but if I cannot reproduce it or it isnt sticking halfway down, they may say no trouble found...or recommend something that isnt needed.

Ideas?

Thanks
Mike

Was just reading about hydraulic systems and fluid replacement. To my knowledge, Ive never replaced the fluid. COuld fixing this be a simple fluid flush and fill?

Sounds like the slave cylinder instead of the the clutch. If it was sticking, I think the pedal would still return to its normal position without that play. If the dealership does say that you need a new clutch, I would get a second opinion, case and point, a clutch replacement will not be cheap.

Clutch Fail....Ouch!

When my hydraulic clutch cylinder fails (and it happened twice in 125K miles)
the pedal falls to the floor and you have to pull it back up. From what you
describe I doubt it's the cylinder, sounds like the clutch facing is worn out.

It only happened that once today, and now seems to drive fine. Whats funny is it almost seems smoother to drive since it happened. The take-up and engagement of 1st and into second seems almost smoother...I hope it give some other signs of fail, since guessing at whats wrong by the dealer on an out of warranty car isn't cheap.

Maybe by Wed. it will fail again?
