Tranny Programming 5AT

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT
I have not played around with the tranny in the G35 yet. but figured I would mention this incase you guy's didn't know.
Every Electronic shifted Tranny I have ever worked on has always had a fail safe built in that will put it in the closest gear to 1 to 1 if the tranny looses power. so for dyno pulls if you pull the plug that controls shifting the tranny will not down shift or up shift.
Now because this is a hydralic fail safe Line pressure will be at its max in all gears and you will still be able to put the car in reverse. I would recomend not starting the car in park as the line spike in reverse( +425psi) can and has pushed the converter out of the pump. better to start the car in netural then in drive.
for any one intrested in learning more on trannies in general I did do a write up on IS300 .net but it is more directed to the A650E tranny but there is plenty of usefull info for anyone intrested.

Hope this helps you guy's out and I also forward some contact info to gurgenpb so he could look into a different sloution to your tranny problems.

correct the whole tranny harness. the only way the tranny will fall in to fail safe which is what you are trying to get it to do for a dyno pull is to kill all power and there may be more then one fuse just a lot simpler and eaiser to pull the plug and when you are done plug it back in.

I never said it would be easy lol but I have not had to look for this on the G35 or the G35x so let me see what I can come up with for you guy's
But here for example the plug that needs to be disconected on the IS300 is at the top back of the bell housing. real pain in the rear end. I will see what I can do to get some pictures of the G35 tranny for you. and where the plug is located.
Not hard to find if you know what you are looking for.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT
For what it's worth. I took my (06/02 mfg date) 2003 G35 AT Sedan in to Infiniti of Scottsdale (AZ) this morning for some recall work. The loaner is a (03/03 mfg date) G35 AT Sedan.
Observations:
1) The basic AT functions are the same as my car. Manual Mode is a top gear limiter. The AT downshifts in MM just like it does in "D".
2) The gear selector movement in MM requires less than half the travel of my car. It's like a "short shifter" in comparsion to mine.
3) The TCM program is heads and shoulders above my car's TCM.
3a) My car's downshifts take 1/2 second or longer, the loaner's downshifts are nearly instanteous.
3b) Where my car has always been reluctant to downshift even one gear. This car's program willingly downshifts to the optimum gear... right now. Each of the four times (2 MM "5" - 2 "D") I tested the downshift the gear selected brought the engine to an optimum rpm range. My car doesn't always do this, even after the afore mentioned time delay while AT's making up its mind!
While at Infiniti of Scottsdale I met and talked with Justin (Everything G35) first hand. He's a great guy who was kind enough to show me their newly painted Stillen Supercharged Coupe. It's a real nice car! It's great to deal with mod friendly folks.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT
Dave,
How'd this turn out? Driving impressions?
On a side note: I stopped by my parent's place on the way home and drove their sedan, as I was curious how it'd compare. It has the -AL003 program and downshifts easily and without any issues. Also this one has the 34901-AM605 shifter and it was shorter just like the coupe/loaner car.
(And yes, the coupe definitely needs to learn a bit more and a bit of tuning probably wouldn't hurt either...)
Thanks Dave!

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT
Justin,
Thanks for all your help! I was very impressed with my entire Infiniti of Scottsdale / Everything G35 experience. I can certainly recommend you guys as a seriously performance oriented Infiniti Dealership.
I really enjoyed driving the dealership's supercharged coupe. It's an impressive car. Any chance I can drive it again once you're done tuning?
The upgraded TCM program is indeed better, however it wasn't readily apparent at first. After putting about 80 miles on the car in freeway and stop & go traffic I'm now sure the AT's response is significantly better. Once again it seems like it's taking time for the TCM and ECM (ECU) to fully implement the new TCM program parameters. I'll update any further improvements as I put more miles on the car.
