Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Justin,

I am happy to know that there is a dealer out there that is mod-friendly. If push comes to shove, I gues I can drive out there for necessary work. One question, could you give us some details on how the TCM was programmed? By consult II on the bench using some other method? Would it be possible for me to send my TCM in for an upgrade? With the TCM program I am much more concerned with the tranny staying in gear in Manual mode just like a 6MT would. Also, can the shifter be easily upgraded (34901-AM605)?

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Gurgen,

The TCM was reprogrammed/flashed using the Consult II. There is a PCMCIA card with the updated program that you insert into the Consult II, then hook the Consult up to the car via the consult port. It erases the current program, then burns the new program onto the TCM. I believe the whole process takes about 30 minutes and the car would need to be present as it's done through the Consult port on the car. The updated program on the PCMCIA card is the 31036-AL004 program.
As far as it staying in gear, I'll have to check on that, and see if I can find a list of parameters for each ECU program. As soon as I find anything out I'll post it up here. I want to say that's a difference between coupe and sedan TCM's, but I'm not positive on that, so I'll double check.

As for the shifter, I have them on order so I can see exactly how they vary. I'm hoping it's just an internal adjustment that can tighten up the throw in the manual mode. But I should have them in, in a few days and I'll know for sure then.

Thanks!

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Is this TCM upgrade something any of us can get at our dealerships, or do we need to go to a speed shop for it?

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Well, I would like to say it's something you could get done at any dealership as they should all have the equipment and updated program on hand. However, I have heard that other people have had issues with their local dealerships so you may not have the best of luck, which is too bad because it's really not that much work, especially if the car is already in for other work.
As far as a local speed shop goes, they would not have the proper equipment on hand to perform this procedure.

Justin

You are the man! Please let us know as soon as possible on the behavior of the shifter. A lot of people with 03.5 sedans and coupes are saying that their tranny DOES NOT downshift when in MM mode. I would love to have that kind of control. Waht is the danger, i your opinion, to just go ahead and flash the newest coupe TCM program into the sedan TCM. I know that the obvious answer is that it won't wrk. But if such flases are reversible, why can't we try.

I would drive down to scottsdale from L.A. to get this done, tat's how much I would love to have the car to stay in gear. Please keep us posted.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

I had the same experience with my loaner G35 opposed to my 03 G35 sedan. The service guy said that the loaners will usually drive more agressive because they are loaners and people who borrow cars drive more aggressive, therefore "teaching" the tranny to be aggressive. Makes sense. Try a 12 hour reset, removing your negative battery cable over night, and wham your car will drive the same way as the loaner. That's the debate here. We all want our cars to act like loaners and not learn our normal driving habits which usually aren't redline gear shifts or dropping down two gears for a downshift on a day to day basis. Hope this helps...

gspot35,

Typically an ECU reset is a good suggestion. However, in this case the TCM program is what it is. My AT and the loaner's AT response described above was the same in both loaners I've driven. My car's AT response is much better with the 004 TCM program than it ever was with the 000 program.

Justin is checking out if the 2003.5 "short shifter" will work in the early cars or if the early car's shifter can be adjusted or modified for "short shifting". I'm very interested in what Justin finds out about the latest Coupe program working in the early Sedan TCM.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

As far as the short shifting, if you pull up your console around your gear shifter. PM me if you don't know how. There are two micro switches for the up shifting and down shifting right in front of and behind the stick. Just bend the metal actuators and you can set your shift throw. Only down side is that I have not gotten around the adjustment of the actual stoppers for the shifting.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Quick news flash here guys. Our G35 will not let you manually downshift the automatics if it is outside the rpm or speed spec. I have heard of a chip for the TCM, but please beware, it WILL affect your warranty. AND, we have scanners that can tell us you installed them even if you take it out before you come into our dealership. Just a heads up

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Sometimes it won't even downshift if you're inside the RPM range....

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

The only downshift issues I have on the 2004.5 is when I want to drop to 1st...the rest let me do it as long as it wouldnt be out of the redline. 1st seems to be speed limited.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Most all manual shifting automatics won't downshift if outside the proper rpm range anyways right (for example: if the downshift would put it over redline/fuel cut) ?

They're having issues with the car downshifting, even when all the parameters are saying it should downshift multiple gears (for example: cruising just after the car shifts into 5th gear at a low rpm, and then put your foot all the way down and it only goes into 4th, even though it could have/should have gone into 3rd gear to get in the healthy part of the powerband).

InfinitiTech,

Your statement ---"AND, we have scanners that can tell us you installed them even if you take it out before you come into our dealership." --- hopefully isn't a "gotcha" attitude. Do you and the dealership you work for (an assumption) support modifications?

IMHO, InfinitiTech reinforces why we need to identify and support the "mod friendly" Infiniti Dealerships who support us. I, for one, plan to buy my next Infiniti from a "mod friendly" dealer.

A suggestion... add a continuously updated list of modification friendly Infiniti and Nissan dealerships to the FYI section of this forum.

I'll start the list with two I can personally recommend.

Infiniti Dealers:
1) Infiniti of Scottsdale (AZ)
2)

Nissan Dealers:
1) Performance Nissan of Duarte (CA)
2)

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

I bribe my dealer's service people.

I noticed right after a ECU reset my car doesnt do the 5th to 3rd on WoT in regular auto mode. After a few days of driving like a bat of hell it learns again who is driving and starts WoT shifting and dropping gears better in full auto.

Some research that Gurgen did shows that the 2004 and 4.5 have new chip revision in them - the 2003 dont act the same in regards to auto and manualmatic shifting.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Ooooh believe me I am mod friendly by all means. And if I wrench on the car I am very mod friendly when it comes to warranty related issues. I am in Calif though.
