Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

By the way be careful of that solid crank pulley you installed on your engine. Have seen where they damage the crankshaft do to vibration. That is why the original ones dampen the vibration. Just a little FYI

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

FYI if you can show me where one UR crank pulley has ever hurt a VQ motor I'll prob take it off. I have some pretty good expert opinion already but you have something credible to offer I would be the first on board. Also the pulley is one of the reasons I was smoking 6speeds and even some Z times so I really haven't seen the downside - just 6800 faster than ever.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Do the math, I agree it produces HP. The long term strength on the crankshaft will diminish. The original pulley is a harmonic balancer. Which means it deflects resonation in the crankshaft as it spins. That is why it is designed with that thin rubber ring built into it. Dude, do what you want to your car. All I know is an engine for this car is around 8000. And this will void the warranty. I understand the concept od modifying vehicles, I really do, I am on the same boat with ya. I am just saying, I have seen engines with this pulley on it and it creates a slightly rougher idle, wonder why? All that vibration has to go somewhere. And a rough spinning motor will always throw any vibration towards the crank. And with all the aluminum pieces on this motor, eeh who knows. Do what you want though. I just wanted to let you know this info.

InfiniTech,
I work near Campbell but I live further South. Is this something you can do on the side(for a fee of course).

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

my car is smooth thanks to my grounding kit and the pulley never made a difference. In fact less load on the crank could make me belive it's quiter to drive around too. Let me know when you have any complaints ever about a VQ having a problem from a crank pulley.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Actually we have had two related incidents, one guy came in with the pulley still on complaining of a bottom end noise. Which another tech looked at and we had to charge him cause it wasnt a warranty case. The other case I actually loked at, and had the same noise, and I could tell someone had changed the pulley and put the stock one back one. Even though I knew what was going on, I felt for the hot rodder and kind of did my magic to warranty it. So there you have it.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

I know this is a completely different engine and vehicle but the 2JZ GE on the IS300 has the same problems with under drive pullys which is why no one touches them. They say that the engine life will suffer from the installation of pullys, so it just may validate the claim. Take it for what it's worth, but why take the chance, if others have learned the hard way.

Re: Tranny Programming 5AT

Is 300 are a straight six and have a longer shaft like BMW's which is why they usually aren't good for this mod. My dealer installed them and suggested that a VQ is indestructible in this regard and was getting one for his maxy for his wife.

Everyone has an opinion but the people who have UR pulleys or have had them- problems or not- are the ones to listen to! Theory seems to take over reality when the case is compelling or eloquently stated...i dont buy into theories that are unproven. No one has ever shown me a shred of evidence from any VQ ever suffering from a crankshaft problem or "weakness". If some vibrations seem to appear I would want to get it out right away - so far so good. I may know too late but beter than taking theoretically mis-applied advice that was in the context of flaming...
