basically drive around in 1 lower gear than you normally would (ie 5th instead of 6th, 2nd instead or 3rd etc). that will simulate those FD's.

the advantage is you can accelerate faster since you are usually driving higher in the rpm band

if I understand the OP correctly the question is regarding 3.9 vs 4.08 (not either vs OEM 3.5)... 4.08 is a Nissan production ring and pinion gear set and costs 1/2 of the aftermarket 3.9 - for that reason alone I would suggest it.

yes .. iam asking the differences between the 4.08 vs 3.9 wich would be the most benificial for a n/a motor, would it make the car worse for highway driving .. id just like to hear what people have to say before i think about breaking the piggy bank on this mod .. thanks for any info

I went form 3.3 to 3.7 and saw roughly 2-3 mph drop (I'm a bad example though because I run in performance Osiris map very spirited all mainly street)... I know other 3.3 that went to 3.5 which is closer difference that 3.9 to 4.08 would be - the mpg difference isn’t as drastic...

Read my350Z, fresh alloy, 6mtdotnet, 350ztech... there’s a bunch of info out and about if you look.

4.083 is about $450-500, 3.917 is about $1200-1300. To me there isn’t anything that would make the 3.9 worth $700-800 more than the 4.0... but since you are looking for more opinions than mine I'd suggest you check the sites I mentioned, because you probably won’t find it here.

Central has really dropped their prices (I'm pretty sure they were much higher before everyone realized there is an OEM about the same size) The Nissan 4.0 only caught on about a yr or so ago… Nismo is 1300...

Install is about 400-450 (if I remember correctly)... if you are getting LSD this a good time to do it - not much more $

yes, after market... if you're happy with the OEM no reason to switch - but there are much better available... I only mentioned it becasue you wouldnt want to turn around a few month or a year later to pay for LSD install that you could have had done at time of FD... I have a base AT so it was open diff, I was getting LSD ayway and did it at the same time as FD.

getting gears and having high HP such as with vortech and other F/I, 1st and 2nd gear might become useless, since they will rev so fast, especially on a 6MT.

i went from 3.35 to 3.53 in my auto and i think it made me slower from a roll, but a bit quicker from a stop. most of my "driving" is from a roll so i think im going back to the 3.35's. anyone else with an auto notice this?

Nope. If you are in too high of a gear from a roll you wont accelerate fast (no matter what FD you are using)… the shorter FD takes a little getting used to – you will notice you are in higher gear at speeds that you were in lower with the 3.3

What speed are you “rolling” from that you feel you don’t have acceleration?
