Thinking of doing drain and fill on my transmission

Thinking of doing drain and fill on my transmission

So my car has 75,000 miles. Never flushed or drain and filled the auto transmission before. Was thinking of taking it over to my local dealer to do it. Got quoted $185. But then did some research on here and from the thread history I found that a drain and fill would be better since with that many miles all the particles being flushed wouldn't be good because the tranny is use to it now. Thank goodness for this forum where I can find useful information. So a slow and gradual drain and fill is the way to go. I found matic j auto tranny fluid for $7/quart at performancenissan.com. So let's say with tax and shipping for 4 quarts for a drain/fill it'll be $35. And I heard the time it takes to do the drain and fill is 30 minutes. So I would have been paying $150 for a 30 minute job. I can do this myself or take it to my mechanic as long as the exact amount of fluid put back is the same as taken out.

Is there anything else I'm missing? Suggestions, thoughts, and comments?

Not sure of the G's 5AT, but if possible, you should see if you can drain the torque converter as well. The converter holds a few quarts of fluid so it will be a waste if you only drain the pan.

What I've been doing with my wife's 2001 Lexus GS300 which is Auto... I drain it and fill it up and drive it for one week and drain it and fill it again. Do this for 3 straight weeks. The fluid is clean as new... Also, check the rating on the AT fluid before buying. Get either Mobil 1 or purple stuff....

One note, if you asked the dealer to full transmission flush including the torque converter.. That includes them taking the pan off, clean the strainer, taking the torque converter off and draining all the fluid out which should total up to 8 or 9 quarts (I think), install the converter, strainer, and seal the pan, and fill the tranny with new fluid which will take time more than 30 minutes of work.. Now what I've mention above will not be clean as taking the converter off and doing the full flush and but it's second best method. Hope this helps.

use ONLY j matic.

you can do a drain and fill yourself. its very simple.

Dude, J-Matic is Castrol product if you didn't know. Stick to Mobil 1 or Purple stuff.

As express705 said, use only J-matic in these cars. There are numerous instances with people having problems with other fluids.

Yeah.. Would you waste your time and fluid for few hundred dollars less.

Toyota transmission is the same way.... Everybody states that "You can't use any other transmission fluid except Toyota Fluid"... Well, that is BS because I've never had issues with using Amsoil or Mobil 1 on any of my cars. Also, I used Purple stuff in my 03 G35 6MT and I had no problems except smoother shift. Trust me I'v been working on cars for little over 10 yrs now.... And, all I've been using is Mobil 1 or Amsoil for all my cars. If you don't know... As long as you have the right formula rating as it states on your owners manual... You should be fine as long as you don't fully flush your transmission and use totally different transmission fluid as the fill up source.

You're giving out the wrong advice and it could be very costly to someone that doesn't know better. You must use Nissan J-matic for the Jatco 5AT. You could also use the Subaru equalivalent since the same exact tranny is used in any 5AT late Scooby. It may be that Castrol does make the J-matic fluid, but I've looked at the Castrol ATF that you can get in the store and that fluid has a different color and smell. It may work or it may not. It's not a risk I'm willing to take with a $2,800 tranny. If you're Infiniti is under any sort of powertrain warranty and you have a tranny problem, the last thing you an Infiniti mechanic to yank out of the tranny is non-J-matic fluid. You can tell. I've done fluid changes on many cars and J-matic has a color and odor that I've seen before. That's an instant red flag and you can kiss the warranty coverage good bye. In my 03 owners manual, Nissan specifically states nothing, but J-matic fluid should be used. For me, I'm not going to question it. Since changing the fluid out is only needed about every 30-40K miles, I'm willing to spend the extra $20.

I've talked to both the Infiniti and Nissan dealers in my area and they both do tranny drain/fills. This is simply draining the tranny of fluid and refilling. Neither recommed a full on flush. Just a drain/fill every 30-40K miles. My G had about 60K miles when I finally serviced the tranny. I bought 8 QTs of J-matic for $8 ea from my Nissan dealer. I removed the filler pipe cover, jacked up the car and placed a pan under the tranny, I removed the tranny pan bolt (19mm I believe), and drained the tranny. I brought the car down to a static level to get as much fluid out. After the drain, I put the bolt back in and then measured the fluid that came out. If I remember correctly, it was something like 3 QTs and 80ml. I then poured exactly the same amount into the tranny. A week later, I did a second round. In another 10K miles, I do another round and call it good for 30K miles. The job is really simple. The key is measuring how much fluid comes out because you don't want to overfill the tranny.

All depends on how long you plan to keep the car. If its going away after warantee (5 years/70K) anyway, then just do what is required to keep it intact. If you want the tranny to last to 150K, then just do the drain/fills every 30K. If you're looking at holding on until the 300K+ potential of this drivetrain, then do the full flush every 30K.

A tranny replacement is $4K, so by that time, it will be about half the value of the car or more. At that point, the car is almost disposable for salvage. Tranny flush is the CHEAPEST insurance you can buy.

From my past research on the old threads this is what I surmised. Thanks and it looks easy enough. I just need the tools and a place that won't yell at me when I work on my car in my apartment complex.

Dealerships and transmission specialist make their money from replacements. Why would you recommend a $240 flush or even a pan drain when you can wait and gross $4,000.

Drain and refill seems to work if you start early around 30k and repeat every 30k............just enough [30%] new additives to carry you thru.

The machine flush [uses a thin solvent chemical*] to remove varnish and abrasive clutch products worn off by normal shifting. Unfortunately you must exchange 95% of solventize ATF or you will create problems.
