Leaking driveshaft section

Hi,

Hope you guys can provide some help.

I have a Skyline 350GT coupe imported from Japan a month ago (JDM, 2005, 6MT, pearl white) and discovered that the housing on the driveshaft (no clue whats it's called even less what it does) had been leaking for sometime (maybe from new). Nissan dealership in Japan never spotted this leak during the various servicing nor did my Nissan dealership here (they did a general checkup in October 2008!). The housing was covered in oil mixed with dirt which had become so thick it masked the leak.

I have no diagram except that from the Service Bulletin ITB05-002b (attached 1 page). Its the iron housing with flanges tighted with 6 nuts and bolts. All of the nuts and bolts are well tightened (I saw somewhere that FX35 were recalled to have these retorqued and some 350Z with similar problems). Nissan have never done a job on this housing and have not answered my queries convincingly. I'm not mechanical but seem to know more than some of their staff!

Is there a detailed diagram of this housing? Does this unit share the oil with the differential or uses it own oil? If shared, then diff oil level is down so needs changing. I prefer to have as much information before I take it to Nissan for repair.

Moral of this story: Check your vehicle yourself (if you don't already) and not trust others!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,
Mat
