J-matic is now S-matic?

Just stopped by the dealer to pick up some tranny fluid. They told me that they no longer make J matic and he sold me S matic for $15 a quart ouch! Just want to confirm that this is the right stuff before I do a drain a fill.

This same dealer just told that it would cost 2k to fix my flashing airbag light and there is no way around it. I just did a search here and was able to reset it

from what i've read yes.

its liek $10 on mynismo.com

and the dealer quoted you 2k to fix it because they are replacing the airbag that threw off the light as a precaution. resetting the light will clear it yes but the light turned on when something with the airbag is wrong. Just letting you know if the same fault happens again or a third time, its time to replace that airbag.

$15 per quart? When I paid ~$11 I thought I got ripped off. Yea that is the right fluid.

Just did my drain and refill yesterday =) Very simple and easy. Hardest part IMO was getting off the dipstick bolt and that was easy.

Thanks guys... I'll stop by riverside infiniti next time I'm in the area and stock up on the s matic.

Not sure what triggered the airbag light, but if it is a bad airbag, I'm sure the light will come back. Keeping fingers crossed. For some reason I thought that airbags were covered longer than standard warranties.

Drain and re-fill, don't mix. If there is a little in there from before that does not come with a drain, that's ok.

You can only drain out about 3.5 qts, the entire capacity is 11qts. It should be just fine to mix, they are compatible fluids.

JATCO the manufacturer of transmission provides the warranty to Nissan which then passes it on to you.
JATCO has a method of catching non compliant ATF by chemical analysis of ATF.
But generally this never comes into play since the warranty expires at 70k or 100k at extra cost.

$165 is cheap if it prolongs the AT life by even 6 months since 10 year life equates to $450 per year as the cost of using transmission.

I bought Matic J two months ago and they were about $12 a quart (before tax). Today I went to a different Nissan dealer and bought Matic S (they don't sell Matic J anymore) for about $11 a quart (before tax).

I asked the parts dept if I can mix Matic J with Matic S and the guy said absolutely. He said there were some additive they've added to Matic S but other than that he said it's the same fluid but with a new name.
