DIY 03 G35 Coupe 5AT to 07 G35S 5AT differential swap

2007+ G35/G37 VLSD (3.692) swap into base 2008 350Z (3.538)
The car we worked on was a 2008 350Z base with and open non-locking rear differential. The goal was to swap in a LSD at a cost conscious price. After doing some research we decided to try on of the newer G35 differentials with VLSD and a gear ratio of 3.692. This gained our solution of a cost effective LSD and as a bonus had a bit better gearing 3.692 versus the 3.538 that came stock.
Our donor differential came from a 2008 Infiniti G35 6MT. You can see a comparison of the two differentials below. As you can see from the picture they have the same case as well as all the same flanges. The only items that needed to be swapped over from the old differential was the ABS sensors as the donor differentials had individual plugs and the old had one merged plug.
After the sensors were swapped over we put in some fresh fluid into the donor differential and bolted it in. We drove it around for a little while just to let the fluid spread inside the diff and let the diff have a little movement. After that the owner let it rip and his impressions are that it is like a completely different car.
We believe this was a worthwhile and cost effective modification using OEM parts.
The donor diff came from a 2008 G35 6MT and interchanges with the vehicles below:
INFINITI G37 2009 Cpe and Sdn, Rr, RWD, locking, MT (3.692 ratio)
INFINITI G37 2008 (RWD, 3.692 ratio), locking, MT
INFINITI G35 2008 (4 Dr, Sdn), Rr, RWD, locking, MT
INFINITI G35 2007 Rr, RWD, 4 Dr (Sdn, 3.692 ratio), locking, MT
The differential from the Auto version can also be used but you will need to move the driveshaft flange from your old differential as the Auto versions use a 3 bolt flange.

I dunno, PM me. I live in Vegas now, a lot closer so maybe we can do a weekend thing? Takes 4-5 hours and a hell of a lot of paper towels. LOL

uh, just cause it's from an auto doesn't automatically make it an open diff. as long as it was off a sport equipped model then ur good. i'd still take 3.7FD w/an open diff over a 3.3 w/VLSD.
