Shifting from 1st to 4th during curising speeds

Is there anything wrong with doing this? would you recommend doing this?

If at the end of 1st gear, you're not at a speed that's too low for 4th gear, then it's fine. I skip-shift a lot (usually if I'm gunnin' it and go from 2nd to 5th to cruise).

i skip shift all the time. 1-3-5 is very common, at rolling stops 2-4/5 is also common. i have found 3rd gear to be very versatile for low speed corners & city driving below 50km/h - i can essentially leave it in that gear with no shifts required until i stop or speed up.

that said, you don't want to rev in 1st too much. skip-shifting is best for mild to moderate acceleration, if you need to jump on it just shift normally. i rarely go over 3k rpms, most shifts are by 2500. also, leave a bit of extra time for the synchros to slow down while skip-shifting.

^ no problem. i used to drive a camaro '94 5.7L with 6MT. it forced you to shift 1-4 under light acceleration to save fuel economy.

i'm not sure if my skip shifting is the reason, but i seem to get much better fuel economy than most others on here. i've seen 30+ mpg on road trips, and usually ~21 (USmpg) in the city or roughly 525kms/330 mile to a city commuting tank of fuel before the gas light comes on.

yeah better fuel economy was my main reason for wanting to do this. Glad to know i won't be causing any strain on my transmission.

I've always been a fan of skipping gears. Easier to do with 6, rather than 5. I feel with 6 you have much more to choose from when up and downshifting.

I skip shift too...but i've typically done it on V8 cars with gobs of torque at 1500 RPM

Yes its perfectly fine, but make sure you are letting the RPM's fall back down to what they would be at in 4th gear before letting your clutch up, or else you will glaze it nicely.

i hear you, but that has been the surprising thing about the VQ. it is amazingly tractable - at least the 6MT. maybe not with 4 passengers, but with 1-2 people skip shifting is a snap. there's plenty of pull below 2000rpms...

+1^ Tottally agree with you man. Also, + 1 on the skip shifting is more economical. Don't see how skip shifting could cause any harm unless you are putting too much of a strain on the motor by skip shifting a gear too many. That's the only thing that can come into my head that could cause some kind of problem.

I believe it. It's been 5 years since i've driven a 6MT VQ..so i forget exactly how it felt at low RPM's
