DIY: Manual Tranny and Diff Fluid Change
I changed both the diff and trans oil today at 35k miles Not too bad of a job but I am not so sure it was worth it.
yes there was gunk around the magnetic drain plug on the differential but other than that oil was clear. The trans oil was prisitine and looked like I drained out new fluid.
Close to $100 for the 4qts trans + 2qts differential amsoil (yeah I got ripped for $15 a quart) and an hour of messy work. Car shifts great but no better than it did before.

both. 2 qts gl5 for the pumpkin, 4 qts gl4 for the box.
There has been a lot of discussion if anything other than Nissan's tranny fluid is a good idea, even though other companies say their fluids meet or exceede the specs. Due to that I opted for the Nissan fluid for the box and the Amsoil for the pumpkin.
I am having this service done today and the master technician doing the job has recommended BG Ultra Guard Synthetic 75w140 for the differential and BG Synchroshift II synthetic 75w90 for the transmission. Anyone running anything other than 80w90 in the differential?

Amsoil severe gear 75w-90 GL-5 in diff.
Amsoil MT 75w-90 GL-4 in gearbox.
Mine shifts smoother than with Nissan's non-synth GL-4 stuff, especially when gearbox still cold.

The Diff is only 1.5ish quarts so you need to buy (2) One Quart Bottles right?
Some confusion that its 2.75 quarts :O, all the stuff I read says 1.5 but just double checking before I order.

i have a good question. Can someone tell me if i can mix matic s and matic j i have six quarts of each one, was wondering if this would ever be an issue. I hear that matic j has been superceded by matic s so, that means its mixable. Is it safe???
I had great success with Royal Purple oil in my Spec-V Sentra 6sp MT.
I think I will just pick up 5 quarts of the Royal Purple MaxGear 75w90 for changing out the MT fluid and Rear Diff fluid on my 6MT G35 Sedan.
It is offered in a 80W90 viscosity as recommended for the diff, but that is only available in 5 gallon quantities. So I will use the 75w90 all around.
Max-Gear® exceeds Eaton’s stringent GL-5 / MIL-L-2105D
Gear Oil Specs. Max-Gear® also is safe for GL-4 applications
or bronze synchro gears.
Max-Gear® is recommended for use in truck and automotive
differentials, rear axles, or manual transmissions requiring an API GL-5 or
GL-4 fluid. Max-Gear® is suitable for use in Limited Slip /
Positrac applications.
Anybody have any major concerns about this?

Did you have any probs with using the RP max gear on your differential.. I have 2 qts of RP 75W-90 and I am wondering if I should return it and get something else for my diff... Thanks..
My differential royal purple fluid has worked out fine.
BUT the royal purple m/t tranny fluid I was using had to be replaced with infiniti brand because it didn't work well with the syncros and was very difficult to shift into 1st and 2nd at times.
After the transmission experience I will only use the dealer recommended fluids.

Just did mine today.
I got 2 quarts of Redline gear oil. There's no way it can be more the 2 quarts.
My drain plug was caked with debris!

Having access a lift just makes things easier.

Based on reading many threads on this, here is what I'm ordering:
http://www.amsoil.com
For Manual Transmission:
MTGQT-EA
Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube (75W-90) API GL-4
4 quarts total ($13.20 per quart)
For Rear Differential:
SVGQT-EA
SEVERE GEAR 75W-90 Synthetic EP Lubricant
2 quarts total ($13.10 per quart)
To actually pump it into the Manual Transmission & Rear Diff case:
G2039-EA
AMSOIL Hand Pump for Bottles
QTY 1
($11.10)
This should be enough to get the job done!
Just a note, you can actually select the make/model of your car, and the website tells you their recommendations for fluids.
