My oil light never came on with my old VQ b/c I never let it go much below a qt down. Oil light is not a good way to tell you need to add oil

the light only tells you if you do not have oil pressure... it doesnt tell you if you need oil.

When I do my first oil change at 3750 miles my G will have used approx 1/2 qt of oil. Still this is well within the range of "OK".

Now granted my engine is still new and perhaps I consumed oil while the rings were seating themselfs in. But when I do go to Infiniti for my first oil change I will have them record it and have it on file for future reference.

I broke the engine in according to the owners manual and in my experience I used more oil than what I believe is acceptable. On the optimistic side, I don't have the pinging problems that other G owners are having, but summer is still just around the corner.

They may have changed the engine at the end of the production run for 2007to the V2 version. The TSB states that 2005 -2007 G35 6mt Coupes built before May 29, 2007 may be affected by this Oil consumption problem.
That was my exact thought when I first saw the TSB, being that's when the those V2's first became available for OC warranty replacements (May/June 07). Prior to TSB and that cut-off production date on 07's, they were using a different long block replacement part number that ended in M1 not M9 like now.

When you loose oil pressure, you've lost suction on the pump pick-up which means hardly any oil in engine.

Not always true… I had a 280Z that lost oil pressure… the valve that allows one-way flow from the filter failed and there was no pressure…. The light was on, but before I could get off the fwy and pull over all the oil blew past the seal on the filter and the motor seized…

Anyway – the light is not an indicator of low oil. Low oil could be a result of not having oil pressure though.

Agree, your example though rare occurrence, can happen. Unfortunately with these rev-up VQ's, it's due to critically low oil 99.9% of the time. That's been proven here on all the OC threads as well as 350Z's OC thread, except they have an actual pressure gauge and not what I call an 'idiot light' on ours.

by the time the light comes on (because of no oil), its probably too late... using the light as an indicator for low oil is not a wise idea... check the actual fluid level periodically.

i used to check the fluid level all the time..it was always low...I guess I just got sick of it..and the run around from infiniti...so, if the light comes on, it goes off by adding oil and saves me the trouble of checking it. I solved the problem by just getting rid of the car all together.

Sorry to hear about your oil consumption issue. What dealer are you going to for the OC test? I'm located in New York too. Keep us updated. Thanks

Went to the dealer yesterday w/ 1100 miles on the car since the last oil change.
I had checked the level again prior to drivng up there. when i got there the tech checked (i knew for a fact that it was barely touching the dipstick) and just laughed and told the SA, yup, if it's def. MORE then a quart. Replacement is ordered. I went ahead and ordered a JWT clutch/flywheel combo cause i figured they are gonna stick me with a new OE clutch and flywheel for over 2 grand at the last minute like they often do under these circumstances.
I'm just praying that everything goes together as smoothly as possible and they don't **** anything up, and last but not least that my 2nd engine doesn't consume oil.

drive4fun, where in NY are you

It seems like the dealer didn't give you much trouble. You will most likely consume oil with the v2 until you reach 5-10k miles. Just the normal break-in procedure. Good luck with the new engine. I'm in the Queens area. What dealer are you getting the swap done at?

Make sure they have certif master mechs. Less chance of any V2 swap screw-ups.

I gave mine my lug socket and lug key both taped so no damage to inside of my wheel lug holes. Ask them hand ratchet only and no impact please. No wheel damage when my G returned.
