Am I the only one that only hand tightens the filter? Even when removing the filter, I don't need any tools...

I'm guessing whoever installed the filter, cross-threaded it, and used a wrench to install it.

I hand tighten as well, but the factory installed filter was a bish to get off. I still use a filter wrench to remove as I can never get a good grip on the filters to remove them

Yeah... my original factory oil filter was on insanely tight too when I first bought my car. I had to use a wrench to get it off... but I do all my own oil changes and put my new filters on hand-tight and have never had a problem taking them off by hand after that.

Was this the original filter installed at the factory? Try spraying PB Blaster on it and clean off all the oil. Be patient with vice grips and a hammer. It should come off even if it got cross threaded.

Compared to my STi, the G35 filter came off rather easily with a filter wrench even on the first oil change.

If there's anything left of the filter (ie.. the rolled end) then use a strap wrench and try to get it off. I use strap wrenches to get all my filters off now.

Can't say that I ever had this problem, either. I use the K&N oil filter that uses a 1" socket to install or remove.

So CinciG did you get it off..........(oil filter) ?

Ok CinciG this is my third answer to your post, did you get the remainder of
the filter off? I've said this before, K&N filters (buy on line) and hand tighten.
Follow my recomendations and you'll "Never" have these kinda issues again!
It's bad enough laying on your back fighting all those 10 mm bolts but when
the filter won't come off that's gotta make you nuckinfutts....HAHA

Cordless drill, 10mm attachment = 10mm bolts are cake.

NO you are the smart one. You DO NOT need to use a wrench to tighten the filter. As long as you are not a weak A$$ then you should be fine with just your hand. If you have a medical condition then 1/2 turns with wrench after the filter is flush is sufficient. The only time I had issues with an oil plug OR filter is when I FIRST bought a used car and the prior owner had the oil changed a quick lube. The dam filter and plug was on so tight the filter crushed and plug stripped. Then I had to heat the plug to get it off with a pipe-wrench. Then I took a chance and did the screw driver through the filter trick. Thank got it worked.

if theres enouh to, take a drill and drill a hole through and use a screwdriver to turn it. If not, then try an oil filter wrench like others have said. After that pliers

Fighting the oil filter........?

WTF another new post, I wonder if he ever got the filter off himself or if he
had the stealership remove it for him?? For all you ace mechanics on Driver
you're correct, filters should be installed hand tight. But thru heat expansion
and after several months they get tighter, that's why it requires a wrench to
get them off. Yea, if you consider yourself super dude you might be able to
remove it by hand but I warm up my car prior to doing an oil change and the
filter get kinda warm (aka hot)........
