Check this before your powertrain warranty is up!

OK well I finally got around to checking the #6 coil pack, and lo and behold, there is oil leakage on the end of the spark plug tube (small in comparison to what bythabay found in his vid, see 1st post). Here is the pic of my #6 coil pack:

For comparison purposes, here is a pic of the next coil pack I pulled out (#5 I think). As you can see, it's completely dry.

I plan to call up Orlando Infiniti service on Monday and talk them into getting the valve covers replaced under the powertrain warranty. My warranty ends 12/31/08 so I hope the dealer will adhere to my request without me paying out of pocket. Also I hope they won't give me any beef for the mods under the hood like the plenum spacer and grounding kit. Will keep you guys posted.

i had this done at orlando infiniti. they were a PITA to deal with. i waited 2.5 hours in waiting area for them to confirm it was bad seals on the valve cover even though i had an appointment for leaking valve covers and i brought in the oil soaked spark plugs (iridiums too). im pretty sure they we just trying to find some type of excuse / abuse for which they could have denied the repair. the only mod i had was z-tube. i dont think you will have problem if you have just spacer and grounding kit mods.
if u installed spacer yourself then you might play it safe and pull it. gl

Good news! After talking with the warranty manager and Infiniti HQ, the service advisor at the Infiniti dealer confirmed to me that the repair work for the valve covers is allowable under the powertrain warranty. I'll be bringing my car to the dealer this afternoon, and will be keeping a loaner for a day or so (maybe longer since it's right around New Year's holiday). I'm gonna make sure they're aware of the spacer and grounding kit mods under the hood, and that they're installed back properly after completing the service work.

Loaner cars are available for any service appt which takes longer than 2 hours, but you have to make reservation in advance. I believe this is a written rule for all Infiniti dealers.
Good to know. Thanks!!!
Well I got my car back, and it looks like everything's good to go. All the service work was done under the powertrain warranty, so I only got charged for the loaner car ($10 gas service expense). Only the right side of the valve cover (where coil pack #6 is located) was leaking, whereas in bythabay's case, both sides of the valve cover were leaking oil. The service dept had no problems with the bolt-on mods under the hood, and I verified that they hooked everything back up properly.
If anyone's interested, here is the list of parts necessary to replace the right side valve cover gasket:
- Cover Assy, Valve (part #13264-AM610) $232.72
- Gasket, Rocker Cover (part #13270-8J112) $16.20
- Gasket, Adapter (part #14032-AM600) $22.92
- Gasket, Silicone Liquid (part #999MP-A7007P) $22.33
Overall, I was happy with the experience at the Infiniti service, but then again I've been treated fairly there every time I brought my car in for misc. repair and warranty work. It was good timing too since today is the last day of my powertrain warranty (6 yrs from in-service date of 12/31/02). I do my best in keeping my car mechanically sound, and being detail-oriented helps out too so I was glad I was informed about the main issue with coil pack #6 in this thread. Big thanks to bythabay for documenting the thread and answering all questions. You are one true asset to the Driver forum!

Oil in cylinder 6
I bought an 04 G35 used with 40K miles a few years ago. The first thing I did was change the plugs (nothing lasts 100K miles) and fluids and completely check the car out while it was still under warranty. I found a small pool of oil in cylinder 6 and had the valve cover gaskets replaced under warranty. There was also an annoying squeak from the rear deck (near the speakers), the dealer was very familiar with this and fixed the squeak as well as the pool of oil. I would definitley recommend to anyone to check their plugs around 50K miles (prior to the warranty expiring) for this issue. The plugs are not too bad to get to, but they are a bit of a pain. You have to remove the air plenum and the coil pack mounting bar. Do-able but still a pain to me.
