Harm in a bad ECU reset?

I just installed the K&N drop in filter and despite seeing a post from some folks thinking that an ECU reset isn't needed, I decided to try the gas pedal sequence. I don't think I got it right, the SES light blinked a few times but I'm not sure it was at teh right time. I tried it again and got a different blink,

Is there any harm in performing a bad ECU reset?

There should not be. Were you able to reset the ECU in the end?

I'm not sure. How would I tell? One time after I finished, the SES light started to blink fast and on the other it went from a slow blink to not blinking.

Try removing the battery leads positive first and then negative, touch them together for 10 seconds and reconnect in reverse order. I tried this and it seemed to reset the ecu for me after installing the Injen CAI.

Re: Harm in a bad ECU reset?

Ecu constantly resets its adaptive memory [short term in seconds; long term in minutes/miles at cruise speed] to compensate for changes in atmospheric pressure [rain storms, going up down mountains] and temperature changes.
Where people got the weird idea that a reset would last long is unknown? Or that it would be effective for more than a few minutes shows they don't understand how the OBD2 ecu works.

A 1% flow change from a CAI is roughly the same as the temperature dropping 11F or decreasing the driving elevation by 333 feet............as far as the MAF and ecu are concerned.

They got it from the same place they got the idea that some ground wires would help something.

From the top two threads.

Add a wire, and reset your ecu, and golly, you'll have a monster on yer hands!!!

Re: Harm in a bad ECU reset?

So you're saying we should be resetting the ECU when we go down hills? How about down freeway ramps?

Just kidding...thanks for the response. I see now that many claim the ECU reset is not needed and haven't touched mine.
