intake for dummies...
so im the dummy and i'm trying to figure out which intake to purchase. I was reading somewhere on the forums that one of the best bang for buck performance moves would be to purchase a Ztube and a K&N intake. i think i understand what the Z tube is, but now i am curious about the intake. I found what i believe is the complete cold air intake, which is priced at near 300 dollars. for that price i could buy a aftermarket intake (i.e. stillen, injen) if this is the case, which intakes are rated better than others...or was the person refering to a K&N dropin air filter which looks just like a new air filter, and i dont see how that would improve HP too much.
also what is a popcharger?
i am planning on buying the z tube this week, but am quite confused w/ the rest of the matter... thanx!

Re: intake for dummies...
I think they mean the Z-tube and the K&N panel filter. Try it out first before swapping intakes. Here's a pic of my Z-tube and Pop-Charger.

Re: intake for dummies...
can you draw arrows to the Z tube and pop charger!?!?
also what exactly does the pop charger do?
so i'd either be replacing my 'panel filter' for a K&N panel filter which would fit in its place inside the plastic housing?
also as far as 'full' intake setups, which are ideal?
do i make sense at all? lol

Re: intake for dummies...
I have the auto and I am very happy with my Injen. The dealership assured me that it was legal as far as warranty.

Re: intake for dummies...
im curious too as to which intake systems are better for certain cars or why. does anyone know a website which explains all this or where i could find out which intake works the best for an auto coupe. Ive heard a lot of people saying injen, but why?

Re: intake for dummies...
Triji,
SWEEETTTT!!! Looks awesome with the painted cover.
dagg,
If you go with the Injen or the Nismo or the AEM for that matter you will not need the Z Tube.
If you go with the Stillen or the Pop Charger, you will need the Z Tube (actually the Z Tube is option in those cases). It's the removal of all the resonators on the stock tube that gives you the awesome sound. Hope that helps.
The performance results are very debatable. So far, I haven't seen anyone actually measure the air temp differences at the MAF to positively determine which gives the coldest air. It has been hypothesized that with the conical type filter, right before the MAF, that it disrupts the flow of air right at the MAF tricking into thinking there is less air than there really is; thus, it then delivers less fuel, creating a lean condition, creating more power. Of course, this is a curve and there is a point of diminishing return whereby if it is too lean, the ECU will adjust timing to protect it, thereby giving you less power.

Re: intake for dummies...
Yes the lack of temperature and flow data [from MAF voltage or ecu grams per second] makes me wonder whether people don't wan't to know the true changes.

here is a pix of the 350z duct vs the stock air duct:
the stock tube has a resonator and fin that quiets the engine, as well as trapping air so that it warms up. You always want the coolest air possible entering your engine.
They do this so so the the Infiniti G35 remains quiet (as quiet = luxury), and it also holds back the performance a little so that the G's are not matching the 350Z's in HP straight off the dealer's lot.
Cheers, ted

Re: intake for dummies...
Does anyone have opinions or comments on Injen, Nismo or the AEM intake systems, Im looking for one and trying to get the best performance part for an automatic g35. Ive heard from a lot of people that injen is the way to go and everyone seems to be satisfied with that intake system. i know for the most part all about the injen intake system but i dont know that much about the other two. help please.

Re: intake for dummies...
i forgot to add, im definitly leaning towards the injen intake, but a couple questions with that. I was told the Injen EIS cold air exhaust has many problems when it comes to getting wet, now is this a serious problem or under normal driving conditions will it affect it bad. Should you go with IS or EIS, and also ive heard a lot about intake systems and Z-tube rubbing on the AC line. Does the Injen intake do this?

Re: intake for dummies...
The Nismo, AEM and Injen are all the same, and I believe they all (not sure about Injen) have a "water bypass valve". This comes in handy only if the intake is submerged. It's not at all relevant for typical rainy driving.
I have the Nismo and will tell you this, it is no where near the A/C line, HOWEVER, the MAF does rub against another hose instead. I had to zip tie it away. This is on the V2 Nismo, which has an integrated MAF. It fits on my 2004.5 Coupe but make sure your MAF has the staggered screws. Another poster with a 2003 pointed out the V2 Nismo will not work with the MAF on his 2003 with equi-distant MAF screws.
