Crawford V5 Impressions

Installed the Crawford V5 Plenum the other night. Test drive obvious impressions:

1. Low end torque is improved.
2. Car seems to climb through the rpms faster.
3. Pulls harder.
4. Mean sound at WOT
5. Idles louder, idle doesn't sound as smooth
6. Exhaust gurgles a little during idle

Are these conditions normal for idle? Possibly a result of running lean?

Awesome mod. Love the power.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

My car doe not idle rougher, still as smooth as ever. I certainly agree with you other observations though. IMO, it's a great mod, and still the best bang for the buck out there.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

You probably just need to let the ECU figure out what's going on. FYI, I did not notice an "uneven idle" after my install. Go get on it a few more times and report back.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

Uneven idle may be result of air leaking where it souldn't be. That's the problem I had. When I torqued everything down more, the idle improved. It was so rough it almost stalled.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

I've had mine in for a week now. Right after I installed it I didn't reset the ECU and took it for a test drive. The throttle felt definitely more responsive. Then I decided to reset the ECU (battery disconnect). At first the car seemed slightly sluggish but after a week of driving under varied conditions, the quicker response is back. Sound crazy? I was going to dyno on Tues. but decided to wait a while.

Definitely louder at WOT. Also a bit louder at idle. I really like it. I hear a slight whine/whistle sometimes which makes me think there is a small air leak somewhere.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

Open your hood and rev it quickly. If you hear a whistle you most likely have an air leak. That's what I heard when I goosed it to try and keep it from dying. I had to torque the crap out of it to get it to quit.

Thanks -fish,

It's on my list for today. Damn, when I put it on I cranked like hell on the bolts until I began to get nervous.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

No you don't. Then you have to sit around wondering (like I'm doing) if all those heat cycles have begun to deform your lower manifold collector....or weakened the threads.

Mine will be replaced this week or next with a less warped version, along with some shiny new headers and Crawford cat. Doug's got to SC he's installing and is a little behind. Damned FI people!

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

did you have any problems with clearance? did you have to use the "double-gasket" method to stop any leaks? overtorquing of the bolts is very bad - could lead to either stripping the threads, or even warping the head/manifold.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

After the V5 plenum install I had a faster, rougher idle until I installed the Crawford cats and Borla. Then, holy moly!...different car!

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

G-eezer, your configuration looks exactly what I am going for except I am doing the kinetix brand. Aren't you affraid of running too lean without an ECU reflash???

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

I'm planning on an ECU flash in the next couple of months - in the meantime, I gather that the stock a/f maps are biased to the rich side (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong). My Infiniti dealer (South Motors, Miami) has a mod-friendly service manager and they installed the cats and Borla during my 18k service. They seem to think the setup is fine and advised me against removing the pop charger and going back to the stock airbox.

Re: Crawford V5 Impressions

You are definitely running lean. You have almost the same setup as me. Tadashi pulled my plugs when he did my ECU and had this to say:

"You drive hard.
You are running lean.
Now leave me alone while I work on the program."

I still have the gurgling, but I think it has more to do with my cats and stillen exhaust.

Get the ECU G_eezer, if you are in So Cal, PM for some info.

Cheers, Ted
