g37 oil analysis

well since there isnt much info out there, i decided id send out my oil to blackstone labs for analysis ($22.50/sample). so far i have about 5500 miles on my 37 and ive gone through 2 oil changes. did my first at 2154 and stayed with nissan 5w-30 (ester additives) to make sure the engine was broken in. at 5044, i switched to motul 300v 5w-40 (true ester full synthetic). althought sharif said it wasnt necessary and motul 8100 would be fine, i dont mind spending the extra $ since oil is 1 of the most important things i can do for my motor. i plan on switching out the 300v every 5000 miles. ill probably send it out 1-2 more times just to see how its doing.

results are pretty standard. higher than average due to break-in but the good news is everything is coming down. nothing is at a harmful level really, just elevated. one thing to note is i pulled these samples towards the beginning of the drain so i would get the worst case scenario.

nissan 5w-30 @ 2154

nissan 5w-30 @ 5044

Interesting. Looks like everything is fine with your '37.

I thought about doing that, but never got around to it.

What is the actual process for doing this? Do they mail you something to send the oil back to them in? Do you try to get the first oil to come out of the pan? Curious.

john,

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

then you just request a kit. takes a week or 2 usually. order it ahead of time so when you change your oil you can just use their sample bottle. or the first time i was slow and just put it in a small clean water bottle until i got my kit.

Thumbs up

Good info.
I'm a big believer in sample testing, I do it every change.

It always sucks when you make a nice post about something you think people will be interested in and the first post after yours is a troll that posts something negative.

...and they weren't all the same... Reading pwns you...

i dont get worked up over the net.

the point is to show the decrease in foreign matter as the engine breaks in and confirm that things drop to normal levels.

i also blew my g35 motor @ 68k miles due to oil consumption. they said it was due to "excessive downshifting". the crazy thing is i drive an auto which is super rare to have oil issues. just trying to keep a better eye on things with the new car.

well both those samples are the oem nissan oil. its lower than their normal range but thats how it is naturally not because of anything bad. im curious to see the viscosity of the motul. just another 4000 miles to go.
