Help. My gear snapped. What can cause it?

How goes it.

I was driving back home, and I was at a turn. I take the turn, step on the accelerator and boom, i can't put it into second or 3rd, or any gear. The car is stuck in first gear, but the gear lever "floats" to all the gears, but does not engage. The clutch is fine. I limped it to a gas station in first gear, called infiniti and they towed it right now from there.

I looked underneath, and something was hanging from the bottom. I didn't even launch the car, i just stepped on it gradually, no tire spin, nothing, and boom, it just went limp.

I am not very proficient with these sophisticated cars. I've never heard of a gear linkage breaking (my friend speculated).

Any one know what it could be?

2004 g35 coupe 6mt
38000 miles.
Stock engine other than exhaust.

Will this be covered by their warranty? I have their elite extended warranty.

If it is not, what kind of money am i looking at for repairs?

Few months back same thing happened to my brothers 350Z . Nissan end up putting a new tranny, don't worry it should be under warranty.

The clutch is actually fine. I was able to drive it in 1st gear(where it was stuck) to the gas station. The clutch never got stuck.

I had to press the clutch so that the tow truck driver could put it on the flat bed because of the car being stuck in 1st gear.

On a different note, roadside assistance came and picked up the car in 15 minutes, even though over the phone they stated it would take 35 minutes. The driver took his time loading the car, making sure he used wooden planks on all tires. He secured it properly, shook my hand, gave me his card, and I was on my way.

Hopefully the dealership service will be just as good.

hmm..odd I haven't taken the G's transmission apart before but many experiences with hondas. From the looks of the illustration, the linkage in the G is quite short compared to hondas. I'm thinking that bolt to the linkage snapped, if not that..then the other one thats closer to the case.

Are you the original owner? Maybe it was taken apart for a clutch service, short shifter installed, etc....and wasn't properly assembled back together.

It was dark so i couldn't really see what was hanging, but it looks like the illustration you have.

I am not the original owner. I bought it used from the infiniti dealership. Under warranty, last year, they replaced the power steering belt, and valve body (maybe).

I really hope it is covered under the powertrain warranty.

def sounds like a problem with the linkage, hence you can "float to all the gears" and you're still stuck in 1st. the Stick isnt connected to the tranny anymore.

^^ Yup, I don't think you need a new tranny

So, I just got the car back from the dealership. They didn't charge me anything. They told me it was just a simple bolt that came loose. They fixed it in a day.

The gear feels like a new car now. I am surprised at how good the gear feels actually. So accurate, so precise. I recommend every one making sure all the nuts and bolts are tight.

The gear feels like the g37 gear now. I am soo happy.

Kudos to kelly infiniti in Danvers for doing a great job and getting it fixed in a day.

Why you visit dealership evey 90 days for an oil change and so that they can FIND THINGS to charge Nissan Warranty to repair.

same thing happened to me the day i bought my car. im from jersey and i got the car from maryland and by the time i was in jersey i couldnt get it in 5th 6th or reverse. i put the car up in the air and pulled that boot off and the bolt holding the shifter to the rest of the linkage was halfway out. so i put it back in and added another nut kind of as a jam nut and havent had a problem since. glad to hear they didnt charge you anything either

Some people might do that, but from what I understand they aren't aloud to do that.
