Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.

When I called abou the Y-pipe the guys were happy to discuss things for a while, including the dyno. They said they used the same procedure as most tuners: take a bunch of runs stock and modified, and pick the WORST stock and the BEST modified. He had no problem explaining this.

I'd be VERY interested to see the worst stock compared to the best stock . I wonder if the gains are almost the same as the worst stock and the best modified ?????
Thanks for the info, Rikker.

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
Exactly. What is required is a "difference of means" test to show significant differences due to the independent variable or chance alone.

Neffster:
It was my car that was tested with the Y-pipe. 3 stock runs
netted 219.5, 219.9, & 220.1. 5 runs were made with the new
y-pipe: the best run was 225.5 & the worst was 223.9. All the
other runs fell somewhere in between.
The 225.5 HP run was the first with the new Y-pipe. I think this
happened because we had to let the car cool down before
changing the pipe.

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
Now from that info. I would conclude that this y-pipe is right up there with the rest of them. It is not really any better based on ~5hp performance gain (that's pretty standard), and not too much better based on price (my JIC was $420 incl. shipping).
Basically I'd say that this y-pipe is another equivalent alternative to fujitsubo and JIC. Which ever one you can get for the cheapest price including shipping is probably the "best deal". If I was the owner at Unlimited Tuning I'd definitely drop the price to have an edge on the market. For $350, this would be the clear choice .

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
Yeah but why pay $350 when you can pay $220 shipped for something that is almost identical.

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
lemans350zr,
dyno your stock vehicle 5 times, then install the new exhaust and then re-dyno it 5 times on the same day. Post your results and tell us how much hp/tq you gained from your under $300 exhaust. With all of the money you saved on the exhaust, you might have enough scrap left over to pay for the dynos.

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
The y pipe is identical, if you want to use your money that way so be it. In the mean time I will continue to save my money where I can to other mods.Whatever exhaust you use the gain will be neglible.
Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
lemans350zr,
Actually I'm betting that you've gained ~5hp with the new y-pipe, then gained zero hp with the new exhaust. Nissan has designed a fantastic exhaust (post y-pipe) and the Performance Nissan Racing groups endless dynos, and both the CA and FL dyno days have proven that the stock exhaust (again post y-pipe) is great. I was thinking that you might have considered buying the cheap y-pipe and something else besides the exhaust to have saved a little more money and maybe saved a few hp as well. The dyno thing is not only fun, it's informative. (And for the record I've already spent some money dynoing my modded G to show how gains work on our cars )
Keep in mind, the fujitsubo cat back exhaust showed a gain of ~5 rwhp across the power band in the CA dyno day. The ~$400 fujitsubo y-pipe alone did the job, the other ~$800 for the exhaust was shown to be money that could have been better spent on a NA G35.
Also, Dave-O's well publicised (and often butchered) exhaust comparison post showed a peak hp gain for half-a-dozen different exhausts that were all basically within +/-2 hp gain of what a y-pipe mod alone will yield. This +/-2 hp is well within the dyno tolerances, thus making the ~$200-$400 price for a y-pipe a great investment over a full aftermarket catback system.
I am/was truly interested in seeing how your cheaper version of a full catback system compares to the $1200+ systems. I bet it would be eye opening and make a lot of people feel as if they've spent too much money.

Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
To be honest your right. I actually took your frist post kinda woring. I knw that the best bet was the y pipe and test pipes. I was actually going to leave the stock exhaust from the y pipe back. But again I got it for so cheap I really didnt think it could hurt. I might not have gained any from it but dont think I really lost much either. My point I guess was I felt certain people charge way more than what its worth. The y pipe is an excellent example. Anyway!!
Re: Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe dyno.
According to the manufacturer the opening at the collector is about 3" and the CAT openings are about 2.3" - 2.4". If I'm not mistaken, these are the same dimesnions as the Fujitsubo.
