Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

Mfung, Here's what I used on my Intake: It's a common item at speed shops.
Made by Thermo Tec Automotive Inc., you get about 3' of it for about $40 USD. Pricey, but good.
I don't have the web address for them.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

and here's what I plan to put on my exhausts ( up close to the headers and back to the H pipe.: Made by Design Engineering Inc. www.designengineeting.com. If memory serves, it was about $60 USD for 2 boxes of 50'x2" -- not including locking ties and High temp silicone coating (spray).
Not as expensive as the bling-bling 'Cool Tube'.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

Yeh, I've seen a few with the Cool Tube including SoCalTed and others. GSedan35 has a similar product on his too.

The DEI Heat Wrap helps with underhood heat, and with scavanging heat and exhaust resulting in a slight power increase. (so they say-)

Mfung, Thanks for posting thermotec's web addy, for others to use.--- http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/full.html

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

Colin - I have the exhaust wrap on my Borlas & it definitely keeps the heat in the tubes ( where it's supposed to be ). I did that on my race car years ago & it prevented serious burns when doing mid-race plug changes. Haven't tried the intake wrap but it makes sense.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

Hey M/Gene, haha, yeh that heat wrap has been around longer than most members. My first use was on a set of headers on a 5.0 'Stang ('94). Went on slick (headers off) and worked well in keeping heat down and reducing burns.

How far back did you install the wrap on your Borla pipes?
I plan on going from just behind the headers back as far as I can.(with 50' a side)
How much at what width did you use?
I'd like to do the headers, but with them installed would be near impossible.

I haven't done any temp testing on the cool wrap on the intake, but I suspect it's quite effective in reducing heated intake, and heat soak.
The "racing" you did was Drag Racing, or????

Colin.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

That looks exactly like the stuff I put in my attic.....
Got it at Homey Depot.
I may take some I had left and give it a try.......maybe I could sell "Custom" kits!
LOL

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

They also offer header blankets, which can be installed without removing the headers. Not sure how well they work, and they don't exactly look great. lol

I had good experience with their heat tape when I wrapped my intercooler and intake pipes on my old '97 Mitsu. GSX. Didn't have as much luck with their manifold blanket around my turbo manifold. The heat rating was high enough, but the blanket still started to smoke after the manifold heated up. Not cure either... ...it REALLY smoked! Started to brown the foil too. I ripped it off in a hurry at an autoparts store... ...with the help of a mechanic that pulled up and had his Mechanix gloves with him. lol

Again, I had great experience with their foil tape. No complaints there.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

Here's my setup...I replaced the lace-up thermo-tec with a custom sewn thermo fabric sleeve that was created by Ivory_G.

Here's a listing of all the thermo-tec products avail on Summit racing.

DaveO also used the adhesive backet thermo barrier on his MAF and Stillen airbox. I'll be following suit when i get back from vacation.

Summit Racing link to Thermo-Tec products

Cheers, Ted

Header Wrap

Colin - Yep, I'm an old school dragster!! I used two rolls ( one per header ) of Thermo Tec 2" wide wrap from Jegs ( #893-11002 ) @ $31.99/roll plus their stainless snap-straps to wrap my Borlas from the mounting flange all the way to the collectors. I had enough to wrap the collectors also but since I never went that far before on any of my other cars, I stopped.
Thermo Tec does, as Ron mentioned, have header jackets that slip on the individual pipes for those who have already installed their headers. They just don't go down as far as U can go with the tape ( provided the pipes aren't already mounted ) but I'd think they'd be better than nothing. Jeg's has those @ $59.99 for a V-6 kit ( #893-11246 ) if U're interested.
I first used the wrap on my '69 Z-28 back in 1976 & just carried forward from there. My favorite alternative ( albeit costly ) was to ship my headers for my Lingenfelter 'Vette to Jet Coat for their spray-on treatment. Good stuff but not worth the extra time & cash for this application, IMHO.

Re: Header Wrap

I've used the header wrap (second pic) before on my Charger and had no issues at all. Good stuff, kept the plug wires from burning on my header tube. However, my friend used it on his Chevelle and every time he did an oil change some got on that wrap and soaked in. When it would get hot the soaked in oil would burn and smoke. The wrap would also hold moisture in some spots and caused a bit of rust on his exhaust. So I guess there are pros and cons, but I never personally had an issue with it.

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

OK....Gsedanman....you inspired me!
I have been looking for ways to keep intake air temp and heat soak to a minimum.
Here is my "super custom" Z Tube / air box intake insulation mod.
I took leftover Reflectix Insulation (from doing my attic)
and made it fit.
Total cost- approx. $3.00 and 1 hr labor.
Thanks!

Re: Heat Wrap (Intake/Exhaust)

OldVFRGuy,

You're not kiddin'. That was inspiration....Damn fine job!

Good luck with the 'kits' . You shouldn't have any trouble undercutting today's prices.

MeanGene,
I'm gonna keep going with more wrap. I'll try the header jackets, and prolly go as far back as I can from the header with the tape. BTW, how close together did you put the stainless straps? I figure about a foot apart, or closer?
Time to check out Jeggs & Summit.

I'd love to hear about your Lingenfelter 'Vette sometime. Have you thought of posting a bio with pics in Other Cars forum?

SoCalTed & BigRon, thanks for the feedback guys. That tape sounds cool, but the blanket iffy. Gotta check out that Summit link -- I like the idea of adhesive backed barrier that DaveO used too.

8" - Give or Take

Colin - The snaps come 20/box ( Jeg's # 893-13001 for $19.99 ) so I used 3/exhaust pipe. They were probably spaced out every 8" or so & I used a stainless 8" worm drive hose clamp to secure the final wraps down by the collector. I can remember the days when all ya could do to a header ( Doug Thorleys or Hookers, in my usual cases ) was paint it with some black VHT.
I didn't even know we had a forum for "other cars"!! Man, I gotta get around this site more often!! I usually go to the Coupe forum then Technical & finally the F/I posts. Gotta start thinking outside the box!!
