Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

This isn't a real big deal, but it is somewhat of a pet peeve. Before I bought my Infiniti I had a Toyota. For obvious reasons the Infiniti blows away the Toyota in every respect except in one minor area. When I hit "lock" or "unlock" from the keyless entry pad the car made a cool electronic beep sound and the lights lit either once or twice. When I test drove the TL I noticed it also had a cool electronic beep just a few octaves lower than the Toyota, When I hit "lock" from the G's keypad the horn beeps. This seems a rather lazy, low-tech way of identifying the car is locked. Now, I know I can turn off the sound, but I like a sound, just not this cheap horn beeping sound. So, is there a way of changing from a horn beep to an electronic beep. Please don't flame this post. I know it's not a big deal, but I thought I'd ask.

Spend $40 on the Z Sport Horns and it'll give it a much better and more respectable sound. They take about 10 minutes to install.

I'm with you on this one. I came from a Toyota as well.

I'm thinking that there has to be an output from the entry module to the horn relay. If there is, then you could rewire it to a new device that gives a nice chirp.

I was wondering if the guys that were working on the windows down mod might know what the outputs are????

Yeah. I didn't have them at our last Jax meet but I had them for the Central FL meet last month.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

The horn is actually controlled by the BCM, the same place that handles the Keyfob reception. If i remember right though, the actual horn swtich controls a relay under the hood, so you could modifiy the output of the BCM to control whatever you want. Keep in mind though that Toyota is very proud of that electronic beep thing, and in an attempt to make one work with a Viper alarm we failed miserably because we diddn't want to spend the money that Toyota wanted for the beeper, and the oen we picked to use wasn't near loud enough....

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

Another possible way to get a "beep" sound would be to set the lock toggle to "no horn" operation (double blink of the turn signals only), then install a soft beeper under the hood, wired to both turn signal lamps, which would only sound when BOTH turn signals were on. A simple circuit would permit this, or even a couple of relays. Of course, the beeper would also sound if you had the flashers on, but that's a rare occurance. This avoid messing with the BCM.

It would be easier to pick it up from the door lock solonoid.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

How so? If you want to be able to hear the beep the 'beeper' thing would have to be under the hood, our cars are too quiet to mount it inside. If you use the parking lights wire or the horn trigger wire they should both be under the hood already.

Instead of making that little circuit though (that would be beyond most poeple here) it would be easier to use a relay controlled by the igniton, so whenever the ignition is off and ONE light flashes it beeps. Of course you will still have the hazard problem.

"How so?"

I agree it needs to be mounted under the hood.
For any one who is capable of attempting this, it shouldn't be too difficult for them to run one wire from the dash to the front grill area.
I will be investigating futher for connection points etc. but not for a few weeks. I'll post my findings, if someone else hasn't posted first.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

If someone finds a way to do this, I know it would be a popular mod.
The loud horn blowing when the alarm is armed just doesn't fit the cars style, IMO.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

If you've ever heard the Subaru's lock, that is a really good sound. I heard it on the WRX but assuming it is all the cars, that sound is great for a true sports car.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

Never heard the WRX sound but I was thinking about why Infiniti couldnt make the alarm arming sound better since day 1 I got my sedan.
I always wanted the BMW/Lexus sound but didn't bother to post it or research it. If anyone did this mod and find a constant supply of the parts needed, it would be great.

Re: Electronic Beep Instead of Horn Beep

I've been thinking about this a little more, and one other side effect would be you would lose your panic button basically. The panic would do no good if it was just flashing lights and a little 'cute' beep, beep.

I never use my panic though....
