very confused right now....

i am the proud owner of an 03 g35 coupe (6mt) and the last time i had my oil changed i used mobil 1 synthetic with a b&m oil addative...its been 3k miles even almost and when i had changed it only about a quart came out....now i dont know if it was the addative that caused this or if this oil didnt cut it for my car...but before this i had used kendall 5w30 and didnt lose a drop...today i switched from that mobil 1 to pennzoil platinum plus 10w30....ive been doing a lot of highway driving lately and was thinking this could be the cause of the oil breaking down prematurely...also is it really that big of a deal switching from a 5w to a 10w? i mean if i start to hear weird engine noises because of this im going to change it asap..just trying to get some input here guys and maybe even trying to make myself feel better about this whole situation...

change oil and filter, run whatever oil you used before w/o the additive. Then check oil at 1k, 2k and 3k. 5w to 10w won't make much diff as it's only at this weight until the oil warms up.

Agreed with Jeff. Get new oil and filter without any additive (FYI your car manual specifically states not to use any engine or oil additives) and see how it goes. Although I don't see a problem running Mobil 1 again, I used it for years but recently switched to Pennzoil Platinum because of good reviews on my350z.com regarding its use in the VQ35DE engine. You should be fine using either of them, but start fresh.

If you're lucky, it'll be nothing, just a fluke due to the engine additive. If you aren't, it will be oil consumption and you may be looking at an engine replacement.

check out the #6 spark plug cylinder. Its a long shot but the valve cover gaskets go bad and they leak oil it shouldnt be that much though.

it could have been the oil or the additive but i dont have any leaks of any sort anywhere....only thing i can think of is that ive been doing a lot of 200+ mile trips. so maybe that might have something to do with it...i hope i can get it sold for 12k on saturday!!! wish me luck!!!

Highway driving typically means you have less REVs overall during the mileage. It should mean that you use LESS oil. Unless you are driving 90+ the entire time.
