The point I was trying to make was that a strip of rubber that goes all the way through the pulley is going to be much more effective than a strip of rubber that is glued onto the surface of it. Apparently you disagree, which is fine.

In terms of the 'complex resonating system': if it was indeed this complex and the pulley with the rubber band is an integral part of it, they would have engineered a pulley without a rubber band that is going to dry rot and deteriorate from heat, dirt and grease. They would have milled a pulley from a solid block of metal (of whatever type and density that would yield the proper weight) and not relied a strip of rubber band that could decay and fall out. Instead, they chose to cast one out of iron which introduces the possibility of voids, bubbles, and other defects.

 

al, you are correct in that the rubber portion does not pass through the entire stock pulley.

Just to be on topic, I've had my pulley on for about 10K miles, without any problems. No squeals, perfect idle. The car feels as smooth if not more than before.

 

I have have the full UR pulley set for 5k miles , no issues.
That rubber strip on OEM crank pulley is a "belt noise dampner", nothing more , nothing less. It is NOT a "harmonic crankshaft balancer" that many have seen in the past. The VQ35 is internally balanced.

 

FYI, FWIW for the DIYer, be careful:

Straight out of the service manual:
"b. Loosen crankshaft pulley mounting bolt and locate bolt seating
surface at 10 mm (0.39 in) from its original position.
CAUTION:
Do not remove crankshaft pulley bolt as it will be used as a
supporting point for suitable puller.

c. Place suitable puller tab on holes of crankshaft pulley, and pull crankshaft pulley through.
CAUTION:
Do not put suitable puller tab on crankshaft pulley periph-ery,
as this will damage internal damper."

Puller , huh, it certainly didn't require a puller on my engine with `7k miles. I just wiggled it s bit and it popped off (once the bolt was removed of course).

If you re-install with anti-seez compond as recommended a puller should "never" be needed.

My point was twofold:
1) A courtesy for the DIYers to be careful when you remove/install the pulley.
2) The implication of the warning according to the manual is that the "internal damping" will be affected if the rubber is altered (or removed). Note the use of the word "internal".

Regarding your rhetorical question about FI...

Although not 100% relevant to your question, the following illustrates 2 things to me:

1) If you're modding, do oil analysis.
2) Popular mods that one may think are innocuous may impact the health of your engine, and it's important to measure those effects. Hard to say what caused the excessive lead content in this report, but my only point is that it's important to manage the risk and catch it up front. I know you subscribe to this notion and merely encourage others to do the same.

"Belt noise dampner" or belt vibration dampner? big difference.
Does anyone know of any other car that uses this mysterious rubber ring on their crank pully? If so it it might add to the validity for the arguement for keeping the factory pully.

Alittle off-topic:

I was wondering, after underdrive pulley installation, does the engine rev drop even slower than before? I mentioned before that sometimes it's irritating to rev match upshift because the rev drops very slowly with the A/C off. (Rev drops slowly between shifts) Seems only reasonable that with underdrive pulleys the effect would be further exaggerated. Anyone?

revs drop faster for me.

 

Revs come wuicker, drop faster and the unerhood environment is quiter overall in my car. That may be the grounding wires tho..i cant tell when my car is on anymore unless i see the tach from outside.

No , belt noise is not louder, of course my Crwaford Plenum sound is drowns out all else from under the hood.

The OEM noise dampner function is more for "aged" belt noise. With low miles <20k and properly tensioned belts I didn't expect any added noise. Note the tension levels stated in the shop manual. Most people "under-tension" the new belts which leads to slipping and early glazing = squeel..
