There hasn't been a DIY on removing the timing cover. Not many people on here have removed/re-installed one successfully outside of taking it to a shop. You can polish the timing cover by hand if you have the patience and determination to make it look good. This one (bigc) was polished by hand, looks just as good as any swapped timing cover I've seen, you cannot tell at all that it was polished on the car.

It's not easy but yes, you can do it on the car. I did mine and Silencer_0's timing cover while still on the car.

I don't even know how to polish. What's the average price a shop would charge to swap them

Usually around $800. There is one guy in Socal that will do it for $300. It is pretty easy to polish the TC since it is already very smooth. You just need a few tools and about two full days. Let me know if you want the full details

Lots of hand sanding, and polishing it out...time consuming for sure. All polishing is. Not for the faint of heart or time-limited person.

^ what are you looking to do? if its just polishing, then it may be easier to just do it on the car. its not fun, but at the same time, its not particularly hard. just time consuming.

just send it out to get chromed. polished pieces are more needy than paris hilton. they dull and haze after a couple days so all that time you spent polishing it looks like crap in short order.
