How loud is a vortech for daily driving?
Hey guys,
I'm about to take the forced induction plunge. I'm getting my engine built very soon. Its been removed from my G and being broken down as we speak. I've considered twin turbos, but in my area the shops here don't feel comfortable to go the turbo route. Since this is my daily driver, I'm concerned about going with the Vortech due to some of the videos I have seen on youtube.
Is the following link a good example of how a vortech sounds?
I really like the GTM supercharger that came out in mid-late 2012 for the DE engines. The problem is that no one seems to know much about this particular supercharger. Its suppose to be much quieter at idle and normal driving compared to the vortech.
For those of you that have a vortech or have heard a vortech, how does it sound when pushing the car? Does it sound like its about to break down or like a car that has an engine problem?

That is NOT what a Vortech sounds like normally. The bearings on that blower have gone bad. Mine sounded exactly like that before I got mine rebuilt. It is usually much more quiet. If you are going to build your motor I would recommend going turbo rather than supercharger.
Thank you very much for your reply. This video has been the sole reason I was avoiding a vortech. I watched it a while back and just can see myself living with that sound everyday.
Just to clarify, I live in the UK. There are only about 3 or 4 G35 coupes in the whole country. I've been living overseas for a long time now and I've never heard a G or a Z with any type of forced induction. This video was my first impression of the vortech.
The shop that I'm working with is very known in the UK for its work on Z's and Skylines. My G was the first one they have ever seen, but the engine is the same as a Z so they can work with it. They recommended I get a supercharger kit though GTM. Apparently, they have had great success with the GTM kits and that is the recommendation they suggest over a Vortech and a turbo.
I know stateside, when going with a built engine, most shops are running twin turbos. For some reason, they don't want to run them. I have no idea why though. Due to my limiting factors, I'm going to go the supercharger route. I just want to get the most out of whatever supercharger kit I get, without sacrificing the integrity of the engine and sounding like my engine is about crash out on me at any moment. Of course, I would like high numbers, but I'd rather have a bit less horsepower for reliabilty and longevity. This is my daily driver so I want it to be as quiet as reasonably possible for a SC, but have the available power on tap when needed. I'm really hoping the video posted is a not an accurate picture of a vortech. I know there is a vortech version 3 so if anyone has any advice they could give me on that version, I'd appreciate it.
So, I haven't ruled the vortech out, but the GTM kit looks nice. The only issue I have with GTM is their lack of returning emails. That is not a very good impression of the company so far. Again, due to where I'm located, I feel like I have to go with the supercharger for my forced induction needs.

I'm assuming that you guys would suggest to go with the Version 3 Vortech right? Is there a noticeable difference in sound compared to the other versions? I'm asking in regards to how much quieter the V-3 is compared to the other versions to be exact.

It is a lot quieter with the hood closed. I don't believe the V3 is any quieter than the V2. I think that the only difference between V2 and V3 is that the V3 has a self contained oil system.
I have a V2 and it's pretty quiet, the exhaust will be louder most of the time. Vortech makes an excellent kit. If your local shops prefer to do a Vortech, maybe you can inquire about getting a T-Trim to make more power. (Since you are going with a built block)

Depends on the exhaust you have - the SC is def much louder under full WOT compared with even a stock and the same exhaust

If you're really worried about the noise then I can tell you that the GTM Rotrex style blowers will be quieter...if you want more bang for the buck and proven power, go Vortech...

The two videos above me are spot on. My friend is vortec surpercharged with a fully rebuilt engine. It is louder than stock but nothing like that garbage first video. Take your time and do it right and stay with a stock exhaust. Judge it from there if you like that sound (db level). If you can stand it to be a little louder you can go after market exhaust.
My friends only complaint in terms of noise was when he had his aftermarket exhaust (fast intentions). He uses his car as a daily driver. He did not want it that loud for everyday use so he wen to stock exhaust.

Just wanted to Thank everyone for their help with this thread. The 3 videos following my original video post, was very helpful. I know Vortech is the supercharger of choice with the G so I will speak with my tuner/installer about he Vortech again. There are times where I don't care for the loudness of my motordyne TDX2 exhaust and that is with stock cats. That being said, it seems that I will get plenty of engine noise and exhaust noise with the Vortech, and probably any unit I go with. I've considered going with a different exhaust to to compensate for the force induction loudness. It seem as though this topic is about the change, but from the research I've done, maybe going the route of a quieter Borla exhaust and HFC combo would be a comparable option to my motordyne with added benefit of the HFCs. That combo with forced induction seems like the loudness would be kept at a minimal, while maximizing gain of HFCs,dual exhaust, and forced induction. Let me know what you guys think.
