Gas Gauge Problem

Hello. This is my first post. I’ve had my G35 sedan about 2 weeks now and I’ve got a slight problem with my gas gauge. It gets down to about ¼ tank then all of a sudden the needle goes down to empty, the yellow light comes on and the Fuel Economy computer says 0 miles to empty, find a gas station soon. Then over the next 10 minutes or so the needle creeps back up to where it belongs.

Has anyone else seen this? If so, what was the fix? The dealer already looked at the connections around the tank, but they didn’t find anything wrong. I’ve got 1800 miles on it and it’s done this 3 times already.

Thanks,

-Rob

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

That happens when you have very low gas, when you are braking all the gas goes to one side of the tank, so the gauge registers empty, because it’s not getting a leveled fuel reading. But this only happens within a few seconds of stopping then it goes up again when the gas levels out in the tank.

Thank you for the reply, but I don't believe that is the case. Every time it's done it, I've been on the freeway. The gas wasn't that low. 2 of the times the gauge was just above 1/4. It goes down to E within a second or two, but it takes it 10 or so minutes to come back up.
Thanks,
-Rob

Sounds like the sending unit in the tank

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

I've seen my needle go down abnormally fast (a quarter of the entire gauge) and go back up again all in the span of 10 or 15 minutes on the freeway. I've never had the problem you've had except for the gas gauge having a totally different reading when I turn off the car and turn it back on.

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

It happened once on my coupe, with a quarter of a tank then the needle drop to empty, then rise it back up, while i was driving on highway.

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

I haven't had the "empty" problem. I can't get mine full. It will only fill to the mark under full. Dealer says that it is the sending unit but that there is no reason to replace it? Anyone else heard of this problem?

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

I have not personally run into this problem, but you've done everything correct so far. Maybe some dealerships are not as willing to REALLY check the problem. Try taking the car to another dealership and they should be happy to assist you. Ask for a good dealership wherever you are located in the Regional forums. Maybe someone can help you out from there. Good luck.

It's still a G thang!!

Re: Gas Gauge Problem

These guys are generally good but I got the service manager. He and I got into it when I bought my car. The tech who preped my car forgot to put the fuse back in,so I had no blinkers, clock or homelink.I called and was directed to him-he said it brand new, there could be nothing wrong as a tech had gone over the car with" a fine tooth comb.". Well, show him I did and fixed it myself in front of him and the sales manager I bought it from. Now he has a I am better than you attitude.
