Newbie question hr to rev up convert?
Hi folks,
im new both to the forum and to owning a vq. I searched but couldn't find reference to my question.
I have an 05 rev up engine and it drinks a lot of oil so I have been thinking about refreshing another engine and swapping it in. Problem is 05,06 engines are basically nonexsistant in my area, but I can find a lot of lower milage 07+ hr engines.
can I swap the intake and timing cover from the hr to effectively make it a rev up, or is there drastic differences in the heads and cams between the rev up and hr?
thanks

I think I disagree with you on that. I did search and found info on how to make that happen and its fairly involved. Either with swapping the entire harness or by pulling cams and drilling holes in the head.
mostly I want a way to prep the engine ahead of time and keep the car from being off the road as much as possible.

The VQ35DE rev up and the VQ35HR are two completely different engines. Nothing is interchangeable like that.
EDIT: Technically yes you can do it, but the HR has a different deck height so you would be making a custom intake. There's a reason no one does it. You either run an HR or a DE, not a hybrid of the two.
An HR swap requires engine, transmission, wiring harness, ECM, programming, some bending of the power steering lines (or use the ones from the HR 350Z), it's a big project.
It's a lot easier to use a VQ35DE short block from a non-revup and put your rev up heads on it. That's probably what you were reading about.

Or just rebuild the one you have, you literally already have all the parts, just need a rebuild kit, bearings, gaskets, water pump, oil pump, you can bottle hone the block yourself, new rings. Roughly $1000 in parts and $250 in machining as long as nothing is really warped.
Or if you're super cheap you can just pull it apart and bottle hone / re-ring without changing bearings and doing an actual rebuild. That only costs about $350 or so if you're doing it yourself.

Hey folks thanks for the reply's,
I think I didn't do a good job of describing my intent.
I am actively using this car to haul my family so I cant afford to have it out of commission for more than a weekend, and for me I think that means having an engine of the same trim ready to be swapped in.
its ok if it takes a while to get it to that point as long as i can keep driving my car in the mean time.
custom intake isnt out of the question, i have a 4 axis machining center at work that could make that happen if I needed.
but mostly I need to know that the rev up variable timing stuff can be bolted to the front of an hr, and that the cam specs are’nt drastically different. Or anything else i’m not thinking of.
Does the cd09 not bolt up to an HR? That would be a necessity.

CD doesn't bolt up, you would need the JK transmission. The cam actuators (intake solenoids and exhaust magnet retarders) are not interchangeable.
There's a few threads on the internet for swapping DE to HR, some still have pictures, so you can get a better idea what it entails.
The engines are almost completely different in every way, it's going to require as much work as if you were to swap any other kind of engine (LS, 2J, etc) into the car. The only thing they share is the first two letters of the production code lol. VQ just means "aluminum block, variable cam, overhead cam, multiport fuel injection". The DE was the first generation which included the rev-up, the HR was the second generation.
DE Rev-up and the HR (high-rev) versions were completely different, there's a lot of misleading information about the two, mostly from when the HR was first introduced in 2007 and it wasn't fully understood that they are completely different engines.

As for the best way for you to actually swap the engine, you CAN downgrade back to a regular DE, that bolts right in, you will need the ECM for a regular DE as well as the engine wiring harness. The rest of the programming can be handled with Nissan Datascan II software and a laptop. This is the Windows PC version of NDS2, not the Android version.
Then you're just looking at finding a used DE engine, a wiring harness, and an ECM. You can pick up a used regular DE engine for around $1500 or so, a rev-up will be double that.
However you will also be able to sell your existing used rev-up for a hefty chunk as well so keep that in mind.

If you do decide to downgrade to a regular DE you will need the BCM pin number, there's a link in this thread to a free online BCM decoder.
