Oil-Change How-To

I put together an oil-change how-to for anyone's reference that may want to start changing their own oil and not be sure how to go about it. Enjoy.

It will soon be hosted at www.g-owners.com

Yeah, I painted the cover and the battery cover with spray paint. Here's more pics of that: http://www.columbusinteractive.com/G35/ecover

Great write-up. I'd add just one thing to step #7: make sure the O-ring is still attached to the old oil filter (I once had a dealer miss the old O-ring on one rare occasion where I didn't change the oil myself -- needless to say, I didn't make it very far out of the service dept driveway before losing all the oil in the car & I've been religious about checking them since).

Re: Oil-Change How-To

Why do you need to remove the plastic dust cover on the bottom? Doesn't the rectangular hole cut out allow you to drain the oil and remove the filter?

You can theoretically change the oil through the rectangle...but, I have found that the oil gets on the cover and it's a very tight squeeze.

Re: Oil-Change How-To

I don't know if your plastic cover had it, but there is a plastic bolt that holds the cover even after all the bolts have been removed.. This is the last thing u need to remove before the cover can be totally released.
As quoted by gsedanman when I asked about this:

Changing the oil is fun, once you get past that pan. BTW the plastic clasp you're asking about: you have to pry the centre locking pin out a little first then you can remove the whole assembly.

Re: Oil-Change How-To

Mine did not have a plastic clip or bolt. I only had to remove the metal bolts.

Re: Oil-Change How-To

Slinky,
Thanks for taking the time out for this write-up and pics. I've already decided from another post on this forum that I would change my own oil but this helps tremendously. I go through all kinds of anxiety when I bring my coupe to Infiniti for an oil change.
