tech says pinging, but i think different

i am hearing some noises and the tech at miller said that my 6mt was pinging. ran some injector cleaner and octane booster and it still makes the noise, but not as often. what kind of noise did your trannies start making when you first noticed. my father seems to think it is low on gear oil. noise starts on hard accl in 1st and 2cd gear around 4k rpm's. also makes noise when the car is cold on hard accl in 1st and 2cd.

I get the same noise from the engine once in a while. It usually happens when the engine's still cold and I'm accelerating in first or second gear up a slight hill. I've always used 93 octane, so I'm not sure what's causing this noise.

Who's your tech? You're talking about Miller of Van Nuys right?

Are you experiencing what seems to be a hicup in the engine, which could be attributed to pinging, except because it also has a spinning metal clunck to it that seems to originate from the tranny?

I had this symptom, dropped some injector cleaner in it and seemed to improve but it is still present, I think the improvement is in my head and it a tranny related issue. I know for a fact that my tranny is louder and less smooth than day one by a significant amount.

Hoping it blows up or gets worse so that I can go in for warranty work without having to convince the stealer.

i have the car serviced at miller infiniti in van nuys. i forgot the techs name. for right now i dont think it is spinning metel. i had the bearings re-packed already, but i once noticed that there was a spinning metal noise when i was on a turn under full load and all the weight was on the left side and it seemed like the right rear was free spinning with some metal noise. havent gotten it since. got to try that turn again. IF YOU GO TO MILLER, BE CAREFUL WHAT IS IN YOUR CAR. I HAD CHANGE STOLEN AND $40 IN STAMPS. the service mgr did nothing.

Gio,

Honestly bro, no place is liable for what you leave in the car. If I give my car to the dealer, valet, where ever.........if I leave anything in my car I wouldn't mind if it was stolen...so whatever I wouldn't want stolen I take out with me.

There's one tech at Miller, Gene Lee.....steer clear of that guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he was your tech who couldn't help you the right way.

the noise comes on around 3000 rpms in first or second gear. it is very noticeable when the car is cold. it kind of sounds like clicking.

i also get the same ping in low gears, mostly right off idle. dealer said nothing is wrong. i also had some other noise known to affect 6MT coupes (i have a 6MT sedan) and that was fixed, but the ping is still there.

there are some other similar threads in 6mt.net which reaffirms that i am not totally crazy.

it bothers me because i don't want to cause engine damage long term.

could this be a regional gas issue? i am in the miami, fl area and 91 is the highest octane i can get. can the pinging be determined from an infiniti diagnostic test and captured?

anyone figure this out yet?

Pinging is more likely when the engine is hot, especially under load. I don't own a G35 (yet) but it could be a heat shield vibrating on the exhaust. I noticed something similar on my G20. Goes away quickly when it warms up.

Why can you only get 91? I am just north of miami and always get 93.
