Horrible smell and knock @ startup...
Heres the scenario. The G was driven about 300 miles on Sunday(May 7th) and majority of the trip was heavy rain.(not sure if this makes a difference or not) I didn't drive the car until today so it was standing for about 2 days.
I heard and immediately after about 2-3 seconds smelled something that honestly freaked me out. As soon as I cranked the engine i heard this horrible knocking sound that lasted about 3 seconds and then it idled fine. But immediately after that, it smelt as if I had burned something, could of been oil or maybe it was some carbon buildup..not sure. I've done a search on this topic and many of the owners say that most G's do this when the car is cold and that its usually either the oil settling down to the bottom of the pan and the pistons are slapping the walls of the engine w/o oil for a few seconds, OR, the timing chain becomes lubricated. I usually hear a little click immediately after starting the car, but this was definately a loud knock. I turned off the car and started it again, and it seems back to normal, drove it and did the same thing about 3 times and it was fine.
Let me just mention that i'm the original owner, car has mobile1 5w30 ever since 1400 miles, the car has about 31k miles on it, 5AT coupe and I've NEVER had this issue before, even when the car stood for more than 3-5 days. Anyone had this knock and horrible smell before??

Had a similar problem with my Toyota truck after driving in heavy rain and going through puddles. When I started up the next day, smelled burnt oil with knocking sound. The cause of the smell were the belts-the mixture of water/gunk from the engine/dirt on the belts was burnt off. The knocking sound appears to have been due to a still wet air filter-perhaps water drawn into the intake. Had no further problems after that.

Get a compression test done.
Take a look at spark plugs.
Take off upper plenum and look for oil.
Change oil to see if there are any metal shards. (send it off for an oil analysis)
Check the filter.
Look for the problem now so there is a chacne you may warranty it now and not face any problems later.

I've noticed this behavior with all my Nissans. It was usually after they sat for a few days without being started. It didn't always happen after they sat, but it never happened when the cars were started frequently.
There is a terrible knocking sound that disappears after a couple seconds with a foul smell. But I don't think it's oil, I think it's a fuel mix issue. I seem to remember a little dark smoke from the exhaust when this happened, not white smoke.
I always chalked it up to stale fuel in the line or a lean or rich condition at the manifold because the car had sat for a few days allowing any leak or vacuum pressure's to be contaminated by small leaks, etc.
