Re: GroundingGear™

With all the "noticed a difference", "has it in all of his cars", "runs smoother", and "more power" comments in this thread, there MUST be a way to quantitatively measure the benefit.

You just need to put together a well-designed set of experiments (with controls of course) and collect the data. If the work is done right, there will be little to argue with. Until I see that data though, I'm going to remain on the "it's all hype" side of the fence.

Re: GroundingGear™

I totally agree with you dude. If I spend 100 bucks for a mod on my car I want to know it will make a difference. A lot of these companies out here say it will do all this and it really doesnt. Use common sense when looking into mod's for any car.

Re: GroundingGear™

To this guy catatfish, I am not argueing with you on this ground wire thing. Honestly, these are brand new cars, if they needed more grounding they would be in trouble. I am just saying for the money and cost, it is not a wise investment. Maybe you have the money for these mod's just so you can say you have done them, I am more practical I guess. Plus most importantly, If you think you can improve on a .09 of one volt voltage drop, your a guru. I am just saying that .09, you will never feel the difference in your ride. I will argue that to the grave. Oh well like I said, I have been on these cars longer than most, and have been around Nissan even longer. I own a G35, and have access to more information than you. But I am here to offer any help and support that I can to fellow G35 peeps. I have never been a hot rodder that kept all his secrets to himself. I believe in sharing information. And that is all I am doing.

Re: GroundingGear™

It’s been over a week since I've had the 10-wire GroundingGear™ kit installed in my car and here are my observations:

Idle: Maybe Infiniti changed something to the 2004 cars as my idle speeds where already good. I haven't noticed a difference on this part.

Gas Mileage:

I've actually saved every gas receipt with mileage posted on each one since I bought my car 6 months ago. Once I finish this tank of gas I will start comparing the before and after.

Smoothness and throttle response:

I've noticed a subtle difference in the above two things but unless you drive your car everyday like me you might not notice anything.

I did a double blind test with my wife but she didn't say anything to me about the car behaving any differently but she doesn't drive the car enough to notice the improvements. I haven't told her anything yet as I didn't want to spoil the double blind observations.

Now for best part....

The Automatic transmission has improved a great deal especially in the Manual Mode. I don't care what anybody else thinks or says I noticed a huge difference. When I got my car it had just come off the truck so it only had 3 or 6 miles on it. I tried the manual mode several times but didn't like it as it sometimes ignored your requests even though it would not have put it over the redline or under revved the car. It also seemed to have some kind of noticeable delay when you shifted to the next gear or downshifted.

I now find myself using the manual mode a lot now. It’s so responsive now it brings a smile to my face. I even did a pretty nice downshift where it snapped my head back.

My big hope is the gas mileage improves because putting in 25 bucks a week in gas gets old after a while but I'm sure it won't improve enough per week to save a lot but if I get 1 to 2 miles a gallon difference then the savings will add up later. I was use to 5 bucks a week in gas for my 1987 Honda CRX but that’s comparing apples and oranges.

I’ll keep everyone posted on gas mileage results and I’ll probably ask my wife if she’s noticed anything different on the car.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Re: GroundingGear™

Smoothness and throttle response have typically been the most widely reported benefits on most initial impressions. It may be that the difference depends on the car.

The GM at the Infiniti dealer has a set of GroundingGear™ in his 350Z Track, a Super-Charged Frontier, and his wife's G35. He stated it made a significant difference in the Frontier and G35. He notices less in his 6MT 350Z and thinks it is more noticeable depending on weather conditions, ie. better in high humidity. He did however report better gas mileage on a long highway drive- an increase of 1.9 liters per 100km which he thought was significant.

I'm looking forward to gas mileage results on steady-state highway miles as it's hard to evaluate in city driving.

Re: GroundingGear™

In three weeks I'm doing a 1800 mile roundtrip and I'll be on the highways 95% of the time. I'll let everyone know what the results are when I get back.

I'm sorry to bug you but the resource thread is gone. I bought the 5 wire grounding kit from stillen a while back and put it on. I noticed no diff. I have been reading your posts about the development of an improved system. I am interested in your system. Can I just add the additional wires to the stillen system? Or do I need all new wires? Did you do a before and after dyno? What dose your butt dyno tell you? What type of improvements if any will I notice with your system vs. the Stillen system? Sorry for all of the questions. I usually try to do a search and answer my own questions but I can't seem to find the answers.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Well I now have the Grounding Gear 10 wire kit installed. I'm not sure if resetting the ECU did this but I've noticed the car shifts alot better but the biggest difference to me is when I put it in the manual mode it shifts so much better!!! before the grounding kit was installed it seemed like most of the shifts took a second before it would shift and sometimes it seemed like it ignored shifts requests. I'm sure this will be asked but the shifts that where ignored would not have put it over the redline nor would the shift put the engine into too low of rpm range. I guess time will tell if its the ECU reset or grounding kit.

Yes, I notice the same. I believe the ECU/TCU ground has
done wonders for the 5AT. I also don't think the TCU
reprogram will do much for us now. I also don't think Infiniti

responding so well. If we want the newest TCU program,
I think we will need to remove the ECU/TCU wires, as my
service advisor asked me to describe the problems I am
having, bring it in and have the tech drive it around. If they
drove it around right now, they would say "Wow, your 5AT
shifts GREAT!, So just what is your complaint?"

As one of the other Beta tester for the add'l 8-10 wires (ecu and tcu have been on for 2 weeks now) I will say that the shifts are near perfect now. The MM mode is much more responsive and where my slight flick of the wrist used to be ignored at times, the tranny goes right where I tell it now without hesistation and the shifts are smoother and less clunky (downshifting). Upshifting is so crisp and exact when running her hard that I often think about how my car now DOES NOT lack the 3 series refinement, which they somehow dominate when it comes to the relationship between ones motor and tranny. The things i didnlt like about this tranny are now history and I love driving around in MM mode now.

This may be a controversial mod but those folks who are not into power mods and want to refine your auto - this is a good one. Hell even Infinititech has agreed that the idle is smoother and that to me is where driving around town and what not is much better and the throttle is much easier to dip into without the hurky jerkey that sometimes occurs.

Re: GroundingGear™

so there are lots of posts in this thread and it would take me years to read all of them (although I have read a bunch already)...could anyone, gords or otherwise, posssibly link to a post that describes some good places to install the grounding kit? from the pictures, it looks like a lot of people go down sort of in front of the passenger side front strut tower, but the pictures dont point down into the engine, so i cant see where that wire is actually connected...also looks like some people run a wire behind the engine sort of like behind where the intake goes into the plenum (i am guessing this might be to the tranny? a confirmation on this would be nice...i have a 6mt so I guess I wont have to worry about this one if that is in fact where that wire is going)....i have installed a grounding kit to all the other obvious places from the pictures that have been posted and havent noticed that much of a difference....thanks for your help guys...

Re: GroundingGear™

The one going to the left strut tower goes to the factory ground behind the hood sensor switch. Yes, the one behind the engine goes to the tranny, so you won't need this on your 6MT.

Hope this helps.

Re: GroundingGear™

OK...

Some thoughts on GordGee's Grounding Gear:

I installed the "10-wire kit" this last monday night. I ran it around, and the butt dyno felt the smoother shifts.

I reset the ECU (complete process on TechoSquare) and took it out for a mild drive, then opened her up on my favorite street near a "Rail Road", after about 20min of city driving. Definitely shifted more positively...not unlike the shift kit i had on my 68 tbird. Positive, meaning, full torque head snap shift...not sloppy, like you would normally experienced under stock.

Back at the house, after my spirited test, i noticed that my G was idling at around 250 - 300 rpms in the garage - hot. I have the 350z duct, Crawford plenum, Craw-cats and stillen cat-back dual exhaust (but no TS ecu).

Placebo?!?!? ya, maybe.

So I uninstalled everything last night...did my resets again.

I'll let you know what i come up with, as I haven't had time to get out and drive.

Cheers, ted

Re: GroundingGear™

I happened across a 5 wire kit free this week. I feel bad posting anything negative after being given something but sorry, I gotta share my impressions fairly.

I felt absolutely no difference. Idles the same, shifts the same, absolutely no difference on the G Tech Comp HP setting or my QM times. I did notice one thing however. After putting this on, I noticed I was turning off the air and the stereo and being hyper sensitive. Reactivity effect, in other words. I had to consciously try and make my comparisons based on other times I had been paying attention, like a couple of weeks ago when putting on my pop charger. I began to fall into the placebo/reactivity effect phenomenon quickly, as I wanted to feel something after my labors.

I actually audio taped on my camcorder the start up and idle and a run through the gears. I did a before and after at the same temps and had both my neighbor and wife try to pick out a difference in which one may have started easier/faster or shifted differently. They could not, nor could I.

In MM it shifted exactly like it always has. A little rough between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd, then smooth in every other gear. This is exactly how it behaved before. Idle was identical, and I noticed that it varied in Drive and Park, as well as when the air is on, as well as when it's warming up...the variances were just like before the install.

I'm torn between whether it even looks better. No symmetry, an obvious after market component, and rather cluttered. After I do a Samco red hose install and some braided vacuum lines with a black Crawford V5 I'll evaluate the appearance again, and if I can't find a great reason to leave them on for "engine dress up" then I will give this set away and pay for shipping just as was done for me.

I must say it was easy and fun. It gave me something to do instead of just staring at my car during an evening cigar. But I'm very happy I didn't spend anything other than my time.

Re: GroundingGear™

You wont get improvements in shifting until you connect wire #7 and also helps with #10. Nothing should be expected with 5 wires except smoother start up and idle which for me was significantly better. Someone a long time ago did a db test and a vibration test with a wine glass or something and recorded it on video - not sure if its on this thread a way back or not but it was interesting at least.

How did you get a free set?? curious..also what guage and materials if you care not to mention vendor...

Most with 5 wires noted a 100-200 rpm drop at idle -

Re: GroundingGear™

The science...

electricity flows and is impeded by distance and resistance. Solid grounds are important to any audio installation...just ask. Why is that, do you think? Why do audio specialists use large 4ga grounds?

Think of your car's electricity flow/field as your fuel/exhaust, with ground being your "exhaust". Would you stick a 1" exhaust on your G after installing headers, cats and dual pipes? The car would work wouldn't it? The car's computer would adjust for the restriction... you WOULD get from point A to point B...just not as spirited.

OK, then we need to look at noise. Why do folks run shielded cabling for critical network / telecom installs? Signal integrity! Why don't we run data cable with power cables? Again, data integrity.. .you get "noise" in the signal which PCs must recalculate in order to interpret. Grounding kits, although not shielded, provide for less resistence, providing for increased flow of your vehicle's electrical field.

A simple analogy is a thick water pipe vs. a thin water pipe. A thin wire carrying a given current will have a higher current density, when compared to a thicker wire carrying the same current.

Higher current density means a higher probability of collision with stationary atoms and higher resistance.

Now consider the fact that there are many more electronics in your car, using a few stock 22ga grounds. There is one constant in cars, solid grounds are vital to engine performance.

So, aren't the car industry engineers smart enough to give us enough Grounding in our cars? Yes, but just enough. Remember, copper costs (currently) about 1.17lb. Now, consider aircraft Aluminum costs around $3.00lb for fresh sheets (with prices on the rise)

So, the bean counters will naturally say, 4 or five 22ga wires are good enough! Also, use plastic on the interior that looks like aluminum... we need to keep the base price of this bad boy down!

Tests (independent and not Gord's kits)

Car Audio and Electronics test of a JDM kit on a Volvo shows 9hp gain.
