Car PC - Aftermarket NAV and DVD

Hey Guys I know I am the newest member but I am an excited new owner of a 2005 G35 Sedan. I use to swear by German auto makers but my G is making me a huge fan of Japan.

I am looking to put in a GPS, NAV, DVD, Mobile Internet, MP3 system into my car in the next month or so. I am waiting on the guys over at digitalwheelz to finish their 2005 model of their aftermarket video screen. This looks stock so that when you leave your car you only have clean lines.

Anyone else interested in installing a PC system into their car that will let them do all of the following: Full Navigation, with current updates (no more waiting on the OME DVD release), Play back DVD (Of course not while driving , Play any MP3 or WAV music files, access email and the web from your car and hook up any MP3 player or Apple I-pod with full on screen touch controls? And have voice or touch screen control over all of it? All of this from a box that will fit in your top Glove compartment or in your trunk.

Let me know I want to see if there is enough interest to try and set up some deals with a few vendors. To me any way to be I-4 traffic in the car is a great way to go.

Michael

Right now I am looking at about $ 1,200 for the Car PC and DVD player, CD burner, not including software (100 gb HD, EPIA MII 12000 Motherboard with 512 mb ram), External XM Sat, GPRS and WIFI antenna(s)). If you don’t need such a heavy spec you can do a bare bones system for around 600.00

The Screen with housing will run about 750.00 if you want mulit inputs (say add a PS2 to your system) or 600.00 if you want single input, but i am waiting on final pricing. I know if we get a few people interesting and do a bulk buy these prices may go down.

Mobile internet I am currently using Cingular and paying 40.00 a month for it. But I use it all the time for work (keeps me off my clients networks and let me do my own thing). So I see it as being really worth it. Verizon and Cingurlar are having a price war right now on Mobile internet, so you only need to mention it to either provider and they will price match.

Basically in my last car (99 VW Jetta GLX) when Install a Pioneer 7” screen and DVD player, CD changer and I-Pod adaptor, I ran up about 2,000 in parts – I figured if I can do it for less, get XM radio, NAV and video plus all the feature of a PC in my car it would be worth it.

Hey welcome to FGC I am number 142. I have been looking at some parts online to do this but I do not know where to find face plates and stuff to use for the lcd install on the dash.

Do a search on Stompbox. It is a wireless router that allows you to integrate 802.11 and the celluar evdo. essentially your car becomes a mobile wifi acess point. There was some cool stuff on using google earth as a vehicle tracking system as well.

If you get the EPIA MII 12000 Board in you PC Box, you get a PCMIA II slot (that card slot in a Laptop so you can get a wireless card for GPRS or Edge surfing) and then get either WiFi on a Mini PCI card of a USB dongle Wifi adaptor. I am going to use the usb Wifi adaptor and build a box to sit on the back shelf of the car to hold Wifi, GPRS, and XM Sat antenna. The GPS antenna will sit on the front dash off on the passenger side. I am still looking for an all in one anntenna or at least dual XM and Wifi but haven't found a good one yet.

Have you looked at the drivesoft driver frienly software?

http://www.drivesoft.net/dfsl_download.html

It runs on windows xp. I do not know of anyone that has tried to indepently architect a system based on this yet so it would be a 50 dollar gamble. But judging from the demos I have seen of their system it is very nice. Plus being XP based it allows you to bring a lot more to the system.

I've always wanted one of these for my car ever since they came out awhile ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the money for it as of now, but I plan to add this to my car in the future (at the end of my mod list).

I can't wait to see how you're setup turns out. I know DiamondGCoupe has the screen installed to a DVD player in his car...

Smile

Yeah I do the install myself and if I need extra help the guys at AutoSelects are always willing to give a hand. So yeah if you are interested I would be willing to help out. My car is going to be a real test bed as I have to figure out how to hide the antennas. and get the whole box to look clean. I will link some of the boxs I have seen and some of the installs that i have seen in G35 that look great!
