Oil Consumption - Cause??? - VQ35 Engine or Stillen SC or both?

I checked my oil today and the oil on the dipstick was on the L line or Low Line. The oil was really brown also. I figured that it must be because of the heat that the SC generates on the motor. I immediately took it to get the oil changed. It was time anyways so no big deal on that. But what concerns me is that I put 3 thousand miles on this car over the last 4~5 months. Does oil break down in that short of time? I mean, they say to change your oil every 3k or 3 months right? Where I had the oil changed they said that I was about a quart low and that my oil was really brown.

How concerned should I be?

I don't notice any smoke out of the tail pipes and the power still seems to be all there. I just wonder if my motor is on its way out or that this consumption is normal.

I have read plenty of threads on what Infiniti considers as normal oil consumption.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!!!!

Infiniti considers one quart in 1000 miles excessive. One quart in 3000 miles isn't really too bad considering you're boosting. How many miles on the car? Are you running synthetic? I'm running a JWT oil pan spacer, which allows me to run 6 quarts instead of five. This allows me a safety margin in case I burn oil. I'm also running 10W 30 Mobil One synthetic and I religiously change it every 3000 miles. Synthetic seems to stand up better over time than dino oil . Oil gets dirty pretty fast and considering that your oil is being cycled through the SC and engine, I'm not suprised it's dirty and gets dirty pretty fast.

Oh, one more thing. Measuring oil that comes out isn't very simple. Unless they actually measured what came out in quarts, they can only guess. You also must consider the oil in the engine and in the SC and in the oil lines too. It's very tricky. I had a local shop actually measure my oil after 3k miles and I got 5 from 6 quarts. Not bad, but I imagine there is still oil in the SC and in the lines and engine. So, exactly how much oil that is, I don't know. It could be at least 1/2 quart, so burning 1/2 quart after 3k miles isn't too bad.

Thanks Dean.

The Stillen SC oil is separate from what I remember. So... the engine oil and SC oil isn't really connected in my case.

I am running dino oil. I have thought about running syn but haven't really done that much research on it.

I just hit 60k with the car. I had the Stillen SC put on around 56k.

The place I had the oil changed only guestimated from the looks on the dipstick. I asked if they could drain it and tell me and they said no that they didn't have the means to do so. I guess I'll need to find another shop to change my oil or just do it myself.

Skyline - My G35 has 12,000 miles on it. The motor is bone stock, no F.I.

2,600 miles after my oil change, I was approximately 1/2 quart low. I think it's pretty normal for the VQ. I seem to remember a post on My350Z about the VQ being just a little oil thirsty.

The VQ consumes a lot of oil. There are tons of threads out there on it. I burn about 1-1.5qts per 3k with mobil1 syn. I added the JWT spacer at the same time I put on my springs for extra safety.

It's not the blower but the boost does not help.

So I guess that it isn't really that bad compared to some in here that are not even FI, huh?

I've never noticed a drop of oil at all (no detectable consumption) and I change every 4500 miles or so... (NA). 2004.5 5AT w/ 22k miles. I run it pretty hard, often near redline...

You are lucky my friend. Keep that car for a while!

I burn about the same amount of oil now with the SC as I did before.

When I had my Vortech I never lost any oil, I was running Synthetic 10-30 Mobil, I did 41,000 miles with this setup and changed oil every 7500 miles before going TT and now I get at the most 3500 miles out of it before changing oil, but I have noticed about 1 quart of oil loss between changes.
Actually I changed my oil yesterday and started experimenting with a new brand to see any difference(was not using synthetic with the new setup just in case you were thinking).
