Boost comparison
Boost comparison
Car is payed off now time for BOOST... I have $4,300 to play with leaning more on the vortech side reason because of safe & reliability for daily driver
Was wondering if a ST and Vortech both are 370 RWHP from a roll 40 mph or 80 mph who is likely to win ?

let the fight begin
This is really hard to compare but let say everything is equal (driver, Tranny,..etc) I pick Turbo coz it has more torque and it pretty much hit full boost below 4k RPM. Turbo will also hit peak TQ/HP sooner than Vortech. Vortech don't hit Full boost until Redline so you will also not hit peak HP until Redline. HP is HP but you also need to look the over all power curve.
I'm no expert but this is my .02 Maybe I'm wrong
I'd say it's all about the power under the curve. In a roll-on race, you spend most of your time in the upper rpm range. At that point, the turbo are already at full spool, but the Vortech will continue to build boost, HP and torque. Since the Vortech depends heavily on what rpm you're at, I guess it depends where the race begins. If it begins at the top of second gear at 4500 to 5k rpm, the Vortech will do alot better than you think.

true and even after shifting I get 0-8PSI in less than 1k RPM.

ST would probably win with no other factors involved
if you start changing other things around, the gap can be closed in a little. Usually turbo guys go with taller gearing and vortech guys go with shorter gearing so if that was the case, they'd be starting the race at totally different rpms and gear ratios
also lightweight drivetrain parts will improve accelleration, but in the case of turbos in lower gears, it'll be more possible to "outrun" the turbo's ability to spool fast, especially in the case of a ST

$4300 is not enough to go FI at all, unless your going Nitrous - then you'll have plenty extra left over to help buy that new engine -
The issue you should really know - is that the turbo setups are far more likely, and do, to break your engine. It is extremely stressful on the engine to have all that HP and TQ at about 3600RPM's.
With a pulley change on the Vortech, you can get it to spool quicker and have more boost as well. It is also cheaper and far less stress on the engine to build the SC.
For $4300 - save more money. A Vortech kit installed - with a few options like an oil pan spacer, trans cooler if AT, a gauge or two, and a tune - maybe a better EMU than the SS box, a pulley (3.12) and install - will cost you about $7,500. The full kit itself runs about $4,800'ish and install is about $1,200 - tune for about $300 on the SS box, and do other upgrades at time of install to save a few bucks.

Kind of hard to gauge your price without details...thx
IMO, save your money and get twins...the Vortech is "okay," but nothing beats the feeling you get with twins. You could do the Greddy installed and tuned for right around 10k, which although is more expensive, is far better. The price of the Greddy is so low now, that's it's cheaper than most ST's
Take it from someone who HAD a Vortech and now has twins
I'm sure ttrank would agree

For me - I love the Vortech. I've had several turbo cars in the past years - 280z's and 300TT's - all overly boosted and modified. Mine has the 2.87 pulley, heads, cams and a host of other mods that make it a monster - but VERY reliable and predictable.
For the reliability sake alone - I chose Vortech. My preference, if I didn't care about engines blowing up and obvious traction issues with turbo's as well as unpredictable results once boost hits (like in corners, during rain, etc.), I would have gone Twins as well.
My wife drives the car like once per month - when schedules or needs for her car change for me, but I would never want her is a TT car for her own safety.

also - please understand - I am not trying to sell anyone on anything. If you really think you want TT's - save your money. You wont want to buy a Vortech and always think, what if?
Drive in a few of these cars before you spend the money - you don't want to do it twice.
