J, I was just reading earlier on GTM's site about their torque converter saying it's tested over 600+ whp.
I would look there first. Doesn't seem too expensive. Because I have a 5AT as well, I'm looking into the same options since I want it done right the first time.

I would ask GTM also, I mean I have theirs already but for your comfort I would just speak to them on a 1:1 basis to see if they have what you need.
I am aiming for over 550 trq with my new mod additions but so far I have had no issues at the level I pushing right now.

My opinion. Coming from a regular 5AT, to a built 5AT, to a 6MT. Skip the trans unless you go with a TH drag trans. I've only seen a few 5ATs make over 550hp, and they may or may not be as abusive as you want to be with the drag racing.
Consider the downtime, and cost to goal. Autos are cool and they shift fast as hell. With no doubt I'll say being boosted with the manual is much more satisfying.

I'm saying either go with a TH trans for dragging or convert it to a manual. My labor on conversion was 1500ish. I supplied all the parts.
Technosquare did the conversion for me. Took 6 days or so. Drives like it was made that way, I have cruise control which is cool cause I didn't have it at first.
The conversion all in all was around 6k I think this includes me getting a new trans, hydraulics, and triple carbon clutch stuff. Even if a builtish 5AT is only 4-5k installed, show me where these things are making anywhere the efficiency of a manual. I made around 10% more power vs the 5AT.

I'll try to post something up about all the stuff for the conversion. There are some myths about what it should cost, and what you actually need to swap out. Mr_PharmD converted his 5AT, I'm sure he can provide some input as well.
In the big picture, the conversion is no more expensive than a built auto, and the let's not compare downtime vs downtime. Have heard of and read of numerous built autos that had to be redone or sent back or rebuilt. With a manual worry about not smoking your clutch and snapping axles!
It's not so bad. Its an Exedy, not sure how the ATS and others are to drive.
If I were to do the clutch choice over again I think I would do an OS Giken twin. Should be up to the task for most power levels. One of the technosquare Zs is running the os twin and he's happy with it, he had a cusco twin prior to that and he had more chatter and I think the cusco was slipping on him. Depends on how its broken in though. Os twin is reasonably price, there are always us mde clutches which a lot of boosted zs run that seem to hold the power well too.
