Vortech SC Question

Hi everyone
Long time reader, but new time poster.

I did my first mod yesterday, added some Z H.Tech on my 04 AT Coupe (G35 of course) . I'm now looking to add some power into my G. Got some questions regarding the vortech. Hopefully someone ppl can help me out...some of the question might be a newb question.

I want to be on the safe side of the boost section, meaning daily driver type. With that in mind, can I just get the Vortech installed right out of the box without flashing or messing around with the ecu or adding additional parts? and also when you guys say tuning, what does that exactly involve? last question, should i keep everything stock? (exhaust, pipes, headers, intakes..etc)

I just want to be safe than sorry later on. No racing, just want to have some power for fun.

My goal as a daily driver is around 360-380HP/360-380TQ at the wheels of course. Any and every insight would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Cool

You should read around in this forum first, as you can find the answers to every question you asked.....

Brief answer....

You can have a safe daily driver.
You could leave everything stock, but the stock exhaust is very restrictive.
The Vortech kit comes with everything you need except gauges. The SS box includes a base program and will run out of the box. Pig rich...but it will run. You need to have it tuned to get the optimum performance and check on safety of all functions.

Good luck.

Cool, thxs for the info
Yea I've been reading around but there were still some concerns that I was still confused about. Sorry If my question has been asked before. Only question I have is, what exactly is tuning? is it messing around with your ECU? changing the timing? I'm not sure. Everyone says you need to tune your engine once you get a SC but not sure what that meant. Like I said, sorry if this question has been asked before. Couldn't find the meaning anywhere.

THe Vortech kit comes with the Split Second engine management box that is piggybacked to your cars stock ECU by wiring it in.

The SS box can be fine tuned for air/fuel ratios and timing by using a laptop and the SS software.

A good tuner can use the software and the dyno to dial in everything to work together.

My first pull using the out of the box program the Vortech comes with was 330 HP. By fine tuning the system to work with my mods, I ended up with 395 HP. That is a lot of difference that a good tune can make.

Like people have said...the SS box is a piggy back system for our stock ECU. Since the Vortech comes "out of the box" at pig rich levels (only about 340hp), you should get a tuner who can tinker with the timing and fuel maps and optimize the Vortech with around 370-390...depending on how aggressive they go.

I'd say that a tune is absolutely necessary and I say this from experience. Both Neffster and myself got installed and tuned at CP Race. On Neff's first run, something was wrong (ended up being a bad fuel pump from vortech issue i think). If he wasn't tuned...he would not have known and probably blown his engine. And for me....my SS Box was bad at first and had to be switched out. And the switched out box ran at levels way below 10:1. The screen only went down to 10:1 and it dropped there quickly and didn't come back up before the guys at CP Race fixed it.

These are issues that wouldn't have been caught but for the tune at CP Race. Hope that helps

Hey g8tor20,
Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know where to get the SS tuned in the PA/NJ area?

No. You can call Vortech or the guy who does the SS Box (its outsourced) and they will know who can tune it. I don't know how far the drive is....but many of us Florida folks make the ~8 hour drive to CP Race in North Carolina. Those guys know what they are doing and know the VQ very well (just go to my350z.com and they are well praised...)

Experience with what? You need to have the R4 software purchased and downloaded. Then you need to know how to use that software.

If the tuner you're going to does NOT have this software, RUN (don't walk) out of that shop.

Depends how heavy your foot is. Staying out of boost will yield you very close to what you got now. Now....if you boost in 1st and 2nd all day long....it may not be so good.

Since Neff didn't belive me last time...here is a pic. I do flog alot in the lower gears. But...my gas light seems to come on with 5 gallons left.
