Renault and Nissan have officially announced the launch of a new V6 diesel engine that will see duty in U.S. and European models. The new 3.0L diesel powerplant is the result of a €180 million joint venture between the two automakers.

The 235 horsepower mill will be used to power Renault’s Laguna range, but will see a much wider application under the Nissan brand. In fact, Nissan is expected to make up about 75 percent of the engine’s use.

The new clean diesel is seen as a crucial element in Nissan’s quest to make its Infiniti brand a serious contender in the European market – a region where a very high number of luxury vehicles are equipped with diesel mills. “Having this new V6 diesel engine is a key part of the Infiniti launch in Europe,” Malo Le Masson, Nissan’s European product strategy and advance planning manager, told Automotive News.

The new engine will see limited production in 2009, but widespread use is expected to begin in 2010.

Nissan also confirmed the U.S.-spec Maxima sedan is earmarked for the diesel powerplant, but failed to give a launch date. However, the diesel-powered Maxima is expected to hit U.S. showrooms sometime in 2010.

Obviously if they outfit the G and M cars with the diesel in europe they could probably do it in the states, but I doubt there is enough actualy money backed interest in the US to support it.

I suspect that the engine will find homes in the Nissan Frontier/Xterra/Pathfinder, Maxima, and I guess the Altima since the Renault Laguna is based off the US Altima.

I just dont see too many prospective buyers jumping into the unkown with Infiniti and Diesels before they'd buy a Mercedes, BMW, VW, Audi equivalent.

Yes!!! Have you guys seen the performance of the BMW diesel motors? They're so efficient yet provide a lot of power for their application. Infiniti please bring these over here.

Its about time.

The Renault/Nissan 3.0L oil burner only recently made its debut in the Laguna Coupe IIRC, however it's been known for over a year that Nissan was planning to outfit its Infiniti line with a diesel as they trademarked G30D, M30D, FX30D and EX30D about a year or so ago. There are also rumors that the Maxima may receive this motor as well. As for whether or not the CVT can handle 331 ft-lbs of torque remains to be seen.

FYI the motor is rated at 235hp and cranks out 331 ft-lbs of torque.
