just got into an accident in the rain!
I was on my way to work this morning, it was raining very hard. I was driving about 40mph on the highway and accelerated and suddenly my car all of a sudden starts to swerve and spins a multiple times across the highway into the other lanes hitting another car. I believe it was hydroplaning. I went from one side of the highway to the other. Thank God the other person and I are ok, it could have been a lot worse. I have a question about insurance, the cop came and said that the accident was minor and there were no injuries. My car has very light damages, I don't think i will get it repaired, its driveable. I was wondering if my insurance rates will go up? I'm with All State insurance, and i heard theres a no fault rule in the state of TX?
And do i need to send in my report that i filled out? Or can I simply just not contact my insurance? I know they will have to pay for the other party's damage. Since it was basically me who hit them. I never really been in an accident like this before and unsure of what to do or how i should go about handling this. I'm just afraid my rates will sky rocket. I don't mind them paying for the damages that I've caused to the other person's vehicle. But what I'm concerned about are my rates. Any advice help would be much greatly appreciated.

In April I got caught in snow, sleet, rain (semi-freezing), thunder showers, heavy hail all in the same day. I had just switched from Winter to the stock Bridgestone all seasons. The car definently felt unpredictable on certain parts of the highway which never was the case with winters. When it started to feel funny I just let off the gas and slowed down to about 90kph.
My all seasons are definently worn but there is still tread left and they are legal. I've heard the bridgestones are not the greatest tire. What tires are on your car?
PS, glad the accident wasn't any worse than it was.

Puddling water or even a slick stain could have contributed...
...but it does go to show that the VDC isn't the fool-proof option that some seem to think it is. Due to the overly-aggressive nature of my 05's VDC, I rarely turn it on. I have turned it on during to rain, for added safety, only to find that it allows a lot of straight-line wheelspin. Hardly usefull to leave on, for me.
As others have pointed out, the VDC is more geared toward reducing the sideways motion associated with taking a turn too fast, as it definately reacts to the slightest lateral g-force.
It was too aggressive in OEM form. I can only imagine what a joke it would be now if I had it on while cornering hard with the sway bars. It certainly sticks more than OEM, and the VDC hardly allowed hard cornering in OEM form.

I have a hard time believing your VDC was on when you spun going 40mph. You sure it wasn't off???? Or was the entire road iced over? I have thoroughly tested my car in the rain and in the dry and have been pretty surprized at how fast it reacts. I am not saying its full proof, but that story sounds a little off from my experiences.

Sorry to hear about your car. IMO, VDC needs to kick in faster when the G loses its grip in the rain (which happens like all the time). Also, when the vehicle starts to hydroplane, it is a freaky experience, but don't try to fight it. Just hold the wheel straight and let the car ride it out...if you jerk the wheel one way or the other, that's what will get you in trouble and that's probably what you did.
