San Jose/Bay Area Non-Dealership Service

Hey all,

I need expert advice so I came straight to the G35Driver Boards. Just took my 2004 g35 sedan in for service and I was told that it needs new brake pads (front/back) and new rotors (back only) and it was going to cost me almost 900 bucks! Ouch - that seems expensive. Can anyone recommend a non-dealership place for service in the Cal. Bay Area? I'd like to find a place that does reputable quality work and is a little less expensive. I live in San Jose. I have almosy 38K miles on my g35 so I was told I don't qualify for the add-on factory barkes warranty which only covers up to 36K miles. Darn it!! I appreciate the help if anyone can make any suggestions. Thanks.

Go to Scott Performance in Santa Clara. They specialize in performance tuning (Z/Gs). Not sure they do regular maintenance but they mght have some good recommendations.
I used Wheel Works a lot for tires, brakes, and alignment/balancing. The one on El Camino Real just off 85 is my favorite.
I generally avoid dealerships all together except for warranty or recall work.
Routine oil changes an Nissan are not too bad, esp. if you bring you own stuff.

When did that happen? They were around a long time. Well, have not been in the bay area for 4 years, some changes for sure!

Go to Z Car Garage. Just got my brakes done there (6MT w/ Brembos) after the dealer told me I needed new brake pads and front rotors $2200. Went to Z Car, Rob checked it out, I just needed pads and rotors turned, and for less than a 1/3 of dealer price.

I hope you mean 1/3rd of what the dealer would charge for new pads and turning the rotors. What exactly did ZCar charge you for turning and new pads?

(1/3 or $2200 is over $700)

fortified, confused by your question. They charged me less than 1/3 of the dealer price. But yes, they charged me ~$700, don't remember exactly (don't have receipt with me).

Apples & Oranges

I was confused by YOUR statement, mtzbee.

You say the dealer wants $2200 for new rotors and pads installed, right?

Then you say, ZCar gave you new pads and turned the rotors for less than 1/3 the dealer price. Well, of course, they did not install new rotors, it should be a lot cheaper!

Although $700 does not sound that cheap, to be honest. Somehow I do not think the dealer would charge more for the same job. But have not priced it myself. But if the rotors did not need replacement, then you did save money.
Which I think was your point.
Sorry, did not mean to beg the point.

ahh, ic...yes, that was more my point...on a pricing basis and the fact that I did not have to pay for an unnecessary service, z car was a great deal....the dealer was charging $2200 for new f/r pads, and new front rotors. That's a $1500 difference to get new front rotors.

though you're right, i'm sure you can find a cheaper place than z car to get the pads and rotors turned...for me, they offered piece of mind that the work would be done correctly without having to get ripped by the dealer =)

+1 on Zcargarage. They only charge $85/hr on labor. Get some aftermarket brakes man!

I am just not convinced you would be 'ripped by dealer' for the SAME work being done. That was my point. I am not trying to defend the dealer, as I rarely go to one except for a warranty issue.
