Questions regarding Rim Width

sup guys, i got a question ,i know when u go from 18" rims to 19" rims the rotating mass is affected and you are a little slower cuz of the bigger dimension. but does it matter if you go from 18x8.5 rim to 18x10.5 rim but the weight of both of the rims is the same, does it affect speed and acceleration if you go with the wider rim?

Spinning mass is the same (diameter and weight) but the contact patch is bigger - thus more friction. You have to give some consideration to the added weight of the bigger tire.

The launch could be quicker, but it would be hard to say which was the faster combo without testing.

Who cares? The G isn't that fast anyway - go for style points....

this is on my friends Z, he got volk ce28's put on and it seems like the car runs the same, the weight of the tire and rim combo is 46lbs comparing from stock 50lbs but the rim width has increased 2 inches. so you are saying that the width of the rim would not affect speed.

Yes, you would be a little slower but it wouldn't be enough to really tell from daily driving. If you take your car to the track then you would most likely see the difference.

so the wideness affects even though the rims weigh less than stock?

what he is saying is that the added friction from having a wider tire causes slight drag... however much better handling... it's doubtful that a casual daily driver would notice the difference (in the added friction). If you (or your friend) is concerned about rotational mass or excessive friction, get the CE28Ns in 18X8.5... that's what I'm doing. There shouldn’t be any problem in relation to your concerns with those.

with a very wide tire yes possible very slight in a straight line... however speed and acceleration while cornering will probably be a bit faster... in either case it's so minimal I doubt you will notice. I can almost guarantee I can point things out in the performance of your vehicle that will have a greater effect on speed/acceleration. What mods do you (or your friend) have?... There’s certainly area for improvement elsewhere that will have a much more noticeable improvement than an inch or so tread patch will.

No, he would not be slower. Yes, the more wait outside the rotating access has a greater impact than the weight closer the center of the axis; in other words, the tire itself can have a bigger impact than the rim itself in regards to weight and acceleration

But he just said he lost 4 lbs compared to stock. Wider doesnt necesarily mean heavier, although thats usually the case. Just not in this case.

That's one reason why I wan't Volks LE37's so badly

The LE's & TE's are as light as the CE28's... one of the lightest aftermaket 19's you can find.

Too bad I probably won't get my hands on one

.
