Looking to buy used G35...burning oil holding me back

I have been looking into buying an 03 G35 sedan (30k miles) and have a deal in place. I am a little leary about buying it because I have seen alot of post about the engine burning oil and sometimes causing the engine to seize. Is this something that is common among these cars and is it a big enough deal for me not to buy it? I would be getting an extended warranty on it but don't want to deal with filling the oil all the time and the possibility of the engine ****ting the bed. Please give me your thoughts.

It is generally the 05 and 06's with the revved up engine that has the issue, but you can read the thread yourself for more info.

It would probably be a good idea to have a good, independent, mechanic to inspect the car. Though I don't know if he can tell if it burns oil.

My 04 Sedan, with over 43K miles, has worked well. I think the only time I had to add oil was because it was filled 1/2 quart low after the oil change. I recently went over 3000 miles on a vacation, in the mountains in the heat of summer (over 100 degrees in Utah), and didn't have to add oil.

any infiniti will run a consumption test and replace the engine free of charge as long as its under normal conditions and warranty. Any car that seized up due to oil will definitly be replaced.

As stated previously, its really only the 05-06 6MT's that consume oil. The 05-06 6MT's have the revised VQ35DE Rev-Up version of the motor, with the higher redline. 03-04's dont have this issue, and if they do, its very very very few of them, especially if its a 5AT, its unheard of in the 5AT. Go ahead and purchase the car bro, you should be fine.

And my 03 5AT.. They think it was because I used synthetic oil right after the 1st oil change. We are still waiting for Nissan to let the dealership know what happened..I also go to look at the heads and well before I used 76 gas over all others and now I'm told they use some additive in their gas derived from pigs. I had a lot of deposits.

i never had any oil burning issues. and not only did i use to beat this hit outa my car, but i've logged many miles. So i say don't worry, it was just the later models. I would say buy my car, but it prolly has more miles on it than you're lookin for.

Well, I have the 05 and check the oil regulary and no oil-burning issues either. Don't know which exact timeframe the cars have it though. Get the AT, where I think there aren't any that I can remember reading regarding the oil-burning issue.

Shopped for 05/06 G35. Looked at 3 used ones in Atlanta. 2 had oil burning issues and had new motors (1 a long block, 1 a short block), the 3rd car was ragged pretty hard. It had low miles, but rattled, uneven tire wire, lots of TIRE NOISE, just not good. I gave up and bought a used BMW335 with 4k miles on it. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
Had I not been so picky on getting a black on black MT G35 coupe, I"m sure I would have ended up with a G, but I"m glad I didn't.
It's a very good car though. Has some issues, but all cars do, including some of the 335's out there.

Not as far as I know. Once your 6 years is over you're on your own. It will get interesting in the next year or two as the 05's start falling out of powertrain warranty. This really is an issue Nissan/Infiniti should've taken more seriously, but it's no surprise Nissan doesn't stand behind it's products nor their warranty.

I bought an 05 6MT a month ago since my previous G35 got wrecked, and I took a leap of faith knowing that it will probably consume oil. But in my case I'm not planning to keep the car for more than 2-3 years, unless it runs absolutely flawless in that time period in which case I'll keep it longer. Who knows.

But for somebody whose buying this car to keep til the wheels fall off, or it's their only source of transportation, I wouldn't recommend this car (at least 05+ 6MT's) whatsoever.

Synthetic oil will not cause this issue or any engine issue.

It won't cause seals to leak or any other myth.
