No, according to the dealer, when you hear the engine knock there is still about 2 quarts of oil in the engine so you will not kill it right away, unless you drive like that for a while.
I guess it would take to much efford to install the light that comes on before getting to this point. Dealer told me once that there is oil light, so I asked them well engine is rattling where is the light? No answer.

My theory is that the G's came off of 2 assembly lines: a) the Yugo line where the rattles, squeeks, bad brakes and rotors, oil consumption, and poor audio system, were standard fair, and; b) the quality line where most issues never surface. You have to wonder which line many of the cars mentioned here came from!

Caribbean Blue G's came off the quality line. I've never heard of a CB G on this board who had any major issues. Mine has been faultless. I would avoid G's with rev-up engines too.

Thats a color that not many people bought therefore less problems, I highly doubt they came from a special batch.

Yes, a good point. Cars are generally painted after they're made.

Mainly revup VQ's have the OC issue. This fact has been known for almost 2 years with G's and Z's.

CB = higher QC = no problems =

Thanks JackD and Beebo, that's good to know. I love listening to the sound of the engine, so I'd probably notice that first anyway. In the meantime, I'll continue to try to learn to read the dipstick.

Got call Friday from the dealer telling me that infiniti is refusing to repair the vehicle and that I should call 800 number and complain. Called Infiniti, they told me that they have to find out more from the dealer, they need scietific proof that car is burning oil. An empty oil tank, engine ringing like its christmas and dealer stating that the car is consuming oil is not enough? Maybe if that wouldn't happen to me before than I would belive it. I will know more Monday.

Start an official Oil Consumption test with Dealer. That's the scientific proof they're referring to.

And check out my thread on filing a complaint about your defective VQ due to oil consumption.
A lot of Z ppl are showing support for this since I posted my thread over there on the same subject.

Here is an update on my 07 G. These people Cannot get their stuff together; dealer called me told me than I need to pick up the car and keep an eye on oil, I called I called a guy from Infiniti that worked with me on buyback of my 06 G and he said he will look into the case. Manager from dealership calls me few minutes later telling me that according to him there is no solution to the engine problem yet (something about the rings being bad and Nissan trying to figure out why), but there will be a solution in couple weeks. OK what about all those engines that they already replaced, does it mean that they were putting bad engines in all those vehicles before. I called Infiniti and asked about it, I was told that new engine has been approved for me and but she is not sure what is going on because somebody else is working the case. Don't they have computers with notes in the, on top of it she refuses to put me to a superviser. So I am confused now what is going on nobody is giving me a straight answer.
Does anybody know if other Nissan products using 3.5 engine have problems? Dealer said that altima, 350z and other have this issue too.

OC question.

Is the oil consumption an issue with the 6MT or is it also common with the 5AT. I just got an 08 G35 Sedan with the 5AT and in the first 1K I still have a full reading. I had an 06 Maxima 5AT VQ35DE (I believe) that did not use any oil in the 20K that I had it. After reading about the problem here and on a few other boards, the problem seems to be far more common to the 6MTs.

Thanks for the information that you have all posted.

First VQ fix attempt was engine part # 10102-AC7M1 and was concluded a remedy failure.
They were rebuilt factory blocks with revised rings/pistons from Nissan's Tennessee plant here in the USA.
Current replacement in use since June/July 07 is part # 10102-AC7M9 and is the hand built from Japan with the best success rate yet as a fix.

Correct...6mt's that are year 05-06 and 07 coupes. Only those have the revup VQ including 06 350Z 6mt's.
Those are the ones with most OC issues. Not many non revup VQ's, in comparison to revup have OC issues.
Non-revup's are in all 03-04 G35's (6mt's and 5at's), all 05-06 G35 5at's and 07 G35 coupe 5at's.

Your 08 sedan has the new generation VQ (VQ35HR) which is something like 80% redesigned from old VQ35DE's. 07 sedans have the new gen VQ too.
I've heard no OC issues with this new gen VQ.
