Thinking about buying a used G
Thinking about buying a used G
Hi, I'm currently looking to by a used 2004 g35 6mt. It's a real nice car and has all options excluding navigation. The car is being sold at an infiniti dealer, has 48,196 miles and is being sold for $15,942. Im hoping to pick the car up sometime next week, but am a little concerned because on the online website it states that the car is not under warranty and is being sold as is. So what I'm wondering is if anyone knows of any reason why the car is not under warranty and should I be concerned as no reason is stated as to why it would not be under warranty. The car has no modification listed online by the dealer and upon looking over a carfax history report of the vehicle, it's all clear other than it has had two previous owners and was leased both times.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
The bumer to bumper warranty might be done but the powertrain warranty should still be there. Get the VIN # and call infinity and see when the powertrain expires. I bought a used 2003 6MT and I still love it.
The original bumper-to-bumper is 4 years/60K miles from the in-service date, i.e. the date the first person bought it from a dealer. But the power train warranty is 6 years/70K, so I'm surprised they're saying "as is". There are lots of used ones online that say "Has warranty!" and it turns out to be just the remaining power train warranty.
You didn't say what model it was (Coupe or Sedan). If it's a Coupe, it's a good price, if it's a Sedan, it's definitely over-priced. Given that it's got low miles, and it's at an Infiniti dealer, it's price tells me it's a Sedan. You could probably offer $1500-$2000 less than their price and they may take it. It was almost certainly a trade-in, so they didn't give the other guy more than maybe $12,500 for it.
And because it's got less than 60K, there's a possibility Infiniti will sell you one of their Elite Protection Plans, i.e. an extended warranties. A Certified Pre-owned has to have less than 60K and be less than 4 years old to qualify, but I think there's some latitude on the Elite plans when a car has less than 60K but is older than 4 years. The Elite plans are basically bumper-to-bumper for a certain number of months/miles (12/12K up to 48/48K). If you're concerned about a warranty, ask them about this. One nice thing about the Elite plans is they're transferable to another owner if you want to sell your car later.
Good luck, keep us posted.

The car is a Coupe and the dealership is asking $15943. I think it's a good deal, I shot the dealer an email asking if he would come down on the price any and I got a reply stating that they were losing money on the car as is and $15900 is as low as they would go. But it looks really clean and has all options, Im just concerned as to why it isn't still covered by warranty.
Sigh. Did you read my reply on the warranties? It's still under the power train warranty. Don't take the dealer's word for it, get the VIN and call Infiniti. Or ask the dealer why they think it's not under warranty. If for any reason it's not under the power train warranty, then don't buy it. Something very bad happened in its past to void that warranty.
That's a really good price for a Coupe, but when you say "all options excluding nav", do you know what all the options are? If it's got dual zone climate it's got the Premium package. What size are the wheels? 18's were an option. I just did a quick Autotrader search, and there are very few (just a handful) of 04 Coupes with comparable miles that are even close to that price.
But, and this is a biggie, the price is almost too good. The dealer's lying when he says he's taking a loss on it. I would definitely run its VIN through Carfax or Autocheck. I would also take it somewhere else to have either a mechanic or body shop take a look at it and see if they find any evidence of a previous wreck.

take it to a mechanical inspection, maybe the tranny has a problem. the 6mt tranny in 350z and g35 have problem not all of them but im not sure, can someone chip in to clear things out about the tranny
By all options I meant that it had the 18" wheels, Bose system, Leather, Sunroof, Aero package, etc. As far as dual climate control I'm not too sure. But yeah, I haven't asked about the power train warranty as of yet, been busy and haven't spoke to the dealership in a few days. All they mentioned was that the car was not under warranty and was sold as is which threw up a red flag. They made no mention of the power train warranty which should still be valid. But I will ask about it before purchasing and if for some reason it is no longer under warranty I may pass. The Car Fax is clean as I said, no reported accidents or repairs of any kind. But I have heard reports of Car Fax not being totally reliable. 2 Previous owners, leased both times probably a program car or whatever. The problem is the car is about 9 hours away so I don't know about getting it to a mechanic before buying it, I'm going to have to get on a plane fly to where the dealership is and drive it back. On the other hand my friend whom I work with has an 03' G35 6MT with all the same options, color, interior, etc as the one Im looking at now. His car has 86,000 miles on it and he said he would sell it to me for around $14000-$14500. The car is in good shape, the interior looks brand new and I've test driven it, and it drives great. So I'm weighing those two options. I could fly and get the 04' with 48000 miles that Ive never seen in person or driven for $15,900 or buy my friends that's the exact same car other than it's an 03' and has 86,000 miles for around $14,000-$14,500.
By the way thanks to everyone who has responded to this post, it's greatly appreciated.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods

^ I wouldn't consider your friends car unless he's willing to part with it for $12,000 or less. It has a lot of miles and is a year older than your other choice. A car ages a lot when it's getting close to 100,000 miles. Lots more stuff to repair, etc. Also remember it's a first year model of the G. Typically first runs are prone to more problems than later versions.
I would also have to agree with Buckeye here, the price almost seems to good to be true on the '04. But you never know........

Get the service history as well! Ask the dealership to run a copy of the service history. Any Infiniti dealer can pull the history of service done at ANY Infiniti dealership. They also use the service history to document condition of the vehicle to protect themselves from paying warranty work on cars that are abused.. I saw a note in the service history of one car I looked at that said "premature uneven tire wear to inside edge of rear tires, signs of abuse". You can learn a TON about a car this way.
Thinking or Ready....?
So you like the G35 coupe from the dealership, the CARFAX is clean and you can get the service records (which you should) what are you waiting for? It might be a good idea to buy a 12/12 warranty as a safety net. Price seems right (you'd pay $10K more for mine) go for it....
